Best way to defend civilians now is by making Ukraine surrender. Instead of being emotional Ukraine needs to know they can't defend themselves from Russia. It is hard to to accept but Ukrainians need to know the helplessness. Specially considering the fact that people the govt thought gonna help withdraw their troops even before Russian troops landed on Ukraine. Joining Ukrainian army will not help anyway.
Of course considering situations and humans involved chance of it happening is quite low. Also govt started handing out weapons to civilians which inevitably will increase/increasing civilian casualty and wont delay the occupation for long.
I don't think sanctions help in the long run as govt finds alternative way. Under sanctions ordinary people suffer.

I honestly don't know what can be done right now to prevent the worst possible scenario from unfolding. I can only suggest the Russian citizens to first talk to their families and friends to reach a clear consensus about the fact that the war and violence is a bad thing. And then maybe relay this message to their government, convincing Putin or the other higher-ups to stop the war.
Also beware that the social networks are being monitored and it's unlikely that the codeforces platform is exempt from this. As for myself, I'm not going to post anything that may be misinterpreted as if I'm trying to escalate further violence. And at this point I have no intention to sponsor either side's war efforts, because I don't want to have anyone's blood on my hands. Sorry for being an indecisive coward.
War and violence is very bad thing, but guy who declined piece coversation was Zelenskyy, not Putin. Russia put at stake so much, that withdrawing the troups on Ukrainian conditions will be catastrophe for our country. So yes, if you wanna piece now, you should ask Zelenskyy, not Putin.

Though some of these accusations are dubious, UN security council approved the Afghanistan invasion, which includes Russia. A lot of these ones are also very bogus. US invaded Afghanistan twice? The coalition against Iraq when it invaded Kuwait was very big and has overwhelming international support. I'm all for all the intervention against Soviet Union in Europe and Korea, I would not want South Koreans or Europeans to live in that political system. Some of them like Latin American are questionable. A picture from twitter does not explain the full context. Furthermore, even if you don't agree with all of them, it does not justify what's going on right now.

The viral video from St Petersburg — wonderful town which I think is the home town of Codeforces (besides unfortunately of the Vozd) — in which a girl is hit by the police because she is raising a sign with Russian and Ukraine flag in the peace symbol, is definitely on the wrong side of history. I like to imagine that Codeforcers are in that St Petersburg square protesting. I would be there.

I am sincerely sorry that your students faced bad treatment at the border. It is unacceptable. Now is a difficult time, tens of thousands of people, especially families with children, are trying to cross the border to get shelter, many are on the brink psychologically and the situation is very tense. Please don't judge the whole nation because of such an event. There are 20 thousand students from India studying in Ukraine, I think that many of them have good things to say about our people.

Also I found information that may explain (not justify) the situation: https://twitter.com/IndiainPoland/status/1497221153131307009 There is a crossing, which allows only vehicles, while your students constantly tried to cross it on foot. So most likely it has absolutely nothing to do with the nationality of your students.
I have to add that it's sad that news like this on your TV without real context generates such a negative reaction as in your messages.

There are so many alt accounts in this thread so I start to mix up some answers in my head.
The messages like "F*CK UKRAINE", "Russia is doing right", and "you deserve to be destroyed" because of possibly inappropriately used force by some border guards in a tough situation — that does not command respect.
And If you think your anger is righteous, you don't have to hide behind fake accounts.
I am not trying to blame you personally, You explained the reason and so I explained my reason for negative reactions. In your second comment, I realized what you were trying to say, you described the possible situation, as you and I don't know, I did not reply to that.

Ukraine is literally under attack and there's too much chaos, many of there own civilians face several issue. Moreover most of the students are returning home safely without any problem, you cannot come to a conclusion with just single incidence. If Ukraine was really that unsafe, no way this many students would be studying there.
