kostka's blog

By kostka, 2 years ago, In English

As in the previous years, I want to create a list of people participating in the next IOI. Please add participants from your country using this form: https://forms.gle/5J8P4dG8vnUwjBjh7. Feel free to also comment here with their handles for visibility.

The list is available at https://kostka.dev/ioi/22/ .

Lists from the previous years: https://kostka.dev/ioi/21/, https://kostka.dev/ioi/20/ (I know the flags are broken, but I don't want to update them, as the ratings will change as well).

If you see any mistakes, either fill the form again with the correct data or message me.

Thanks!

As a person who was once doxed by an IOI list, I feel like contestants should have some say on whether their name is listed, accepting the name list from anyone except the contestants themselves would risk exposing their real identity (against their will) to the whole internet. Of course, I think that you or any other civil person(or people) hosting such list would promptly remove a person's name if asked by that person.

However, the damage might have already been done. In my case, people found my IOI photo through my codeforces handle and has been using it in who-know-how-many discord servers as a meme or emote without my permission. And it was a bad photo. Now if I want to change that, I would need to go to IOI again, as a guest or whatever since I have skill issue.

I am so sorry to hear that. I wasn't aware of such cases. I will reevaluate the advantages and disadvantages of hosting such a list.

But overall, this data is already collected and published on the official site (https://stats.ioinformatics.org/). As far as I know, by participating in this olympiad you agree to publish your name and photo.

Now, if you want to change your photo on the IOI stats website you don't need to participate in IOI again, just use the edit button on your side and as far as I know, you can change your own picture without any issue.

I know the fact that I need to publish my name and photo to IOI, and that's totally fine.

However, there is no such requirement for codeforces, and the act of linking codeforces handle with the IOI profile is what I don't like.

As far as changing the picture, I remember trying to remove it a few years back, maybe I should try again now.

If anything isn't as it should be here, that's rather IOI asking for a photo. Like what would you have done if the rules of codeforces asked for your name? Would you break them and create a fake account or give up codeforces altogether? Or would you accept your faith as you did with IOI? Also btw, what difference did the correlation between your CF account and your photo make? All those memes could've used your real name as published by IOI anyway (and I truly don't see how using your name would affect you any less than using your CF account). The extra correlation that this list provides is name — CF account — number of attempts left (which does hint the age with some error). You obviously haven't kept your CF account secret as otherwise nobody could've added you to the list, so what is it precisely that you wanted? All this information was already public, just not as easy to obtain. I agree that by most laws this is within your rights and I'm sure that kostka would gladly take it out, but I truly believe for your future well-being that you should start asking yourself why you care about these and try to fix it as the world won't always be as nice as people on CF and you do have some power over what you care about.

I feel like my point was not well represented, so I will say it again:

          • Firstly, there is no problem with IOI asking for real name and photo, and I accept their ruling on that in order to participate in the competition.
          • Secondly, there is no explicit rule in codeforces asking for real name and photo. There are rules about not using other's photo (in good faith we can interpret it as not using other's IRL photo to be a sussy imposter), and not using multiple account. I completely agree with these rules, and have been following them to my best ability.
          • However, there is no rule that my codeforces must be linked to my IOI profile, thus my IRL name and image.
          • I have also never intended to publish, and never published my real name or image online at any point before some other people did it without asking me first.

From these point, it is clear that I just want to keep my codeforces identity (and my online identity as a whole) separated from my IRL self.

Now I will try to set some point that you have raised clear:

Like what would you have done if the rules of codeforces asked for your name? Would you break them and create a fake account or give up codeforces altogether?

I would gladly provide it, and I would treat codeforces as a part of my IRL identity from the get go. The whole point of this conversation is that I could treated codeforces as a part of my online identity, and potentially "linked it" with other part of my online identity, like playing games together with online cp friend. That is perfectly fine and acceptable until codeforces is linked to IRL identify, then all my other stuff might be linked with my IRL identity as well.

Also btw, what difference did the correlation between your CF account and your photo make? All those memes could've used your real name as published by IOI anyway (and I truly don't see how using your name would affect you any less than using your CF account)

My codeforces is "linked to" my discord. If codeforces were not linked to IOI, there is no way they could have obtained my image and IRL name. Sure they can go and get some random guy picture on IOI to troll him, but why would they do that when they don't know who the guy is, or more precisely they don't know that the guy know he is being trolled?

You obviously haven't kept your CF account secret as otherwise nobody could've added you to the list, so what is it precisely that you wanted? All this information was already public, just not as easy to obtain.

I kept it completely secret online. There were virtually no way to link my online identity (codeforces, discord, steam, ...) to my IRL identity (facebook, IOI, linked in, ...). The only way to know that link is to meet me IRL, or get info from someone I met IRL. In fact, the only reason anyone know the link between me and my codeforces account is that I need to use it for offline training. How am I supposed to both keep my account private and participate in training IRL on codeforces if I want to follow the rule of 1 account per person?

but I truly believe for your future well-being that you should start asking yourself why you care about these and try to fix it as the world won't always be as nice as people on CF and you do have some power over what you care about.

I don't know what you are getting at here. I know very well that the world at large is not codeforces, and I have taken my steps for that (after all, I'm a working professional at this point). I think you should also start asking yourself why you care about people caring about things.

We can get into all the philosophical, psychological, and biological reasoning of care and feeling if you want, but frankly speaking, I feel like people complain about things because they don't agree with them. I don't agree with the fact that people online identity and IRL identity can be linked for the whole internet to view without their expressed consent. It seems to me that you don't agree with the fact that I am allowed to complain about that instead of just going on codeforces to grind. At the end of the day, reasoning is not enough to change the mind of people who don't want it changed, so I will just hope that you see my reasons and acknowledge it as valid, or at least that you see that I have my reasons and acknowledge that I should be allowed to have reasons the same way you do.

I think the Edit functionality on IOI Stats is starting to outlive its usefulness to be honest. It made sense while we were trying to recover a bunch of data from past IOIs, nowadays it's mostly requests amending data from IOI Registration system, and it's not possible to verify authenticity of requests (aka is it the person in question or someone trolling). I think apart from social links I'd like to move to a world where all such requests are handled by e-mail soon.

kostka: If I understood correctly, Umi's suggestion can be achieved by you adding a note that asks someone to only submit Codeforces/atcoder/topcoder handle if either

      • it's obviously linked to the real name of the person, or
      • the person consent to the publication.

Otherwise post only the real name. (this one will eventually be available on stats official site, so it should not be a problem)
