I have been noticing a lot of females getting hired by google india despite being okayish at data structures and algorithms or being not good enough. I don't see a lot of guys getting hired.

I just want to ask anyone who is working at google that are you guys told to ask easy questions to female candidates in interviews?

I don't mean to make it a controversy, I am genuinely curious about this and a bit skeptical about google india's hiring process.

This seems to be true for STEP as well.
They can hire / select only female candidates for all I care, they should just disclose it explicitly; but ofc that's not good for the company's image.
Misleading people into believing they are going through a gender-neutral selection process is just unethical.

I totally support your thoughts sir. Being a girl, even I have experienced the same issue in my region. Girls with some below average skills are asked popular leetcode questions where as for boys it's either codeforces Div2 C or D level.

But why would product based companies hire large number of females that are not having adequate amount of dev/CP knowledge, in place of male candidates who have better knowledge? Wouldn't this hamper the companies' growth and productivity ?

Somebody who can effectively communicate with the customers, figure out what they need and be able to perform a lot of simple tasks without getting bored may be much more useful for a company than an autistic algorithmic genius. Especially considering that companies are probably already oversaturated with such geniuses. An army doesn't need everyone to be a general, there's demand for soldiers too.

The female candidates are hired as software developers. Yet they were below average at development. Some didn't even have github!. Also if you check most of these companies like google, facebook, amazon, quora they conduct more algorithmic rounds than rounds that are related to development. Also if you are good at algorithms that means you can learn other programming related stuff really quickly and implement them effectively.

I suppose, by "customers" you mean clients. I don't run a huge company, so I don't know which qualities are most important for a SE, but if DSA is so unimportant and relationship with clients is much more important, why bother to make so many DSA tasks and not make hiring rounds with client, doing more mechanical tasks or whatever you think is the most important in hiring?

Why do people get so pressed with increased representation of female population in STEM? How else would you convince the girls (or their parents/counsellors) that medicine is not the only plausible career path in India. A simple analogy would be any online service providing free delivery to their first customers.

No one have any problem with increased representation of female population in STEM. The problem is that they are being hired on the fact that they are female. Candidates should be hired on the basis of their qualifications especially in a field like tech. It doesn't matter if a field is dominated by a certain gender, people should be hired on the basis of their qualifications. Even people like Elon musk believes in meritocracy. By hiring people on the basis of their qualifications we are respecting their hardwork and encouraging their passion.

Ask yourself this question, if there were more women in the tech field would there be special hiring programs for men????

I agree that it might be frustrating to see someone 'worse' than you getting hired. But just because you are better than someone at DSA doesn't automatically mean that you will generate more profit to the company. In fact, new joiners are not even given prominent roles in the projects, its the senior developers (dominated by men).

You might also be against caste reservation since you're so obsessed with 'meritocracy'. Sure there are some people who misuse it but what about the countless others who are benefitted from it?

Believe me I've asked this question to me countless times and with each time it started to sound dumber and dumber. The world is still a patriarchal society, the what-ifs can be saved for later. This hiring is a stepping stone to change it and is much bigger than you or me. You cannot magically hope for a drastic change without any incentives.

Why do you say its dominated by men?? They are there because they performed better. The women hired were not even good at dev too. Also if you check companies conduct more DSA/CP contests than Dev related contests. Also year by year the leetcode popularity grows?? Doesn't this mean that more and more people and practicing it?? If more people are practicing it, it means companies are focusing on DSA. If diversity and inclusion create more profit then why are many companies protesting against this?? Why are many famous business men don't agree this???

You still haven't answered my last question!

It's not only google but all the big mnc's. i guess that's because these companies have to have a minimum gender ratio and as there are a majority of males in the industry the females have a better chance. It's just that a company has to hire 5 male and 5 female candidates so there are over 500 boys giving the test and only around 30 girls (yeah that's ratio in most Indian engineering colleges). So you can do simple math and calculate the odds.

But why do that??? Why don't we hire people on the basis of their merit even if its all men?? I think China hires on the based of merit, maybe that's why they are ahead in tech and AI compared to the USA.

Most engineering institutes in India have a sex ratio of 10:1, and businesses are required to maintain a better ratio. Nothing personal, simple supply and demand.

Codeforces is not a hiring website, can you guys move this discussion to LinkedIm or LeetCode or something?

In any case, hiring based on knowledge of data structures and algorithms for your typical software engineer position is a questionable practice at best and has caused the competitive programming community a lot of problems and harm. Therefore I can't say I'm particularly outraged if someone was hired "despite being okayish in DSA", especially without knowing anything about their other qualifications.

Rev. 2   Vote: I like it +4 Vote: I do not like it

Yes, it should have been posted on linkedIn or Leetcode. But I didn't post on linkedIn as i probably won't get any reach there. And people don't check leetcode discuss section as often as they check codeforces recent actions with such a headline.

Now the reason to post on codeforces is because a lot of indian male students are working hard, grinding problems every day on this platform to get their dream job. We need to be good at competitve programming to clear initial tests which are more like cf contests sometimes. I want them to read this discuss section to let them know that they are not alone who got rejected based on their sex.

Don't get me wrong, being okayish as DSA is not a bad thing. But rejecting other male candidates who are much better at DSA and have some good projects under their belt and selecting other female candidates who come nowhere close to those male candidates, is definitely not fair.

What do you mean by equality? If we consider woman rights, it is already achieved. People think that hiring should be based on meritocracy. Your sex shouldn’t effect your chances to get a job. People saying their opinions from anonymous accounts because they don’t want to be get fired from their job.

I know I'll get down voted but I guess I'll take the L.

As anyone can tell that I'm pretty bad at DSA but even then believe me when I say I have seen worse get the chance just because of gender.

I am not talking about Google in particular because frankly I don't have idea about it. But I've seen this bias just because of the gender of the candidate during the selection process of other companies as well.

Also the reason that everyone is making fakes is because they don't get to discuss this with their actual ids where their college mates or others can guess whom they're talking about.

But ultimately I don't like these kinds of posts, so not supporting it anyway, just answering your queries.

Rev. 2   Vote: I like it +5 Vote: I do not like it

I get your frustration. But this is not fake. You can see the support this blog has been getting. This is the current situation here in india.

You want proofs? You should check the linkedIn or Github of females who got into google and compare them with males who got into google. You'll definitely see major differences.

I in any way do not mean that females don't deserve google. I have a few female freinds who are working at the big companies and they absolutely deserve it. I am proud of them and I celebrated their success as well. But they did get the interivew opportunity easily. Its not easy for males to get the interiview opportunities.

There are females who have got it because they deserve it. But there are females who are there in google because they are females and are 'okayish' at DSA.

A lot of females get approached by recruiters directly, while very few number of males get approached by recruiters. There clearly is a major bias going on, and I as a male should raise my voice against it. I don't know exactly how this would help solve the problem, but there must be awareness regarding this issue.

Don't you think posting this blog on LinkedIN or twitter would be better ? You are not gonna get response from any google recruiter / HR on Codeforces.

Also a discussion needs to have people from both sides, all I can see here is people who don't like this selection process and people who disagree with you on the basis of their "xyz" criteria.

I think they do these in countries like India because they are under pressure from various interest groups to increase female engineers. India is a good place for it because the salary is low, and they don't do many challenging tasks requiring many excellent engineers.
