At first, DEGwer and catupper and yokozuna57 and yutaka1999 was chosen as IOI member of Japan.

But, DEGwer and yokozuna57 were chosen as IMO member of Japan, too.

And in Japan, it is impossible to participate in both IMO and IOI this year.

After all, they decided to participate in IMO and joisino and HIR180 moved up.

Is there any country in which it is impossible to participate in both IMO and IOI?

I think there'll be some people who were chosen as members in both IMO and IOI ...

In Russia there is such possibily (despite it's rare situation). Nikolay Durov has participated both in IMO and IOI back in 1998, and Dmitry_Egorov has done the same in 2011.

Next year after Dmitry_Egorov I also was a candidate for both national teams, and our team leaders strongly recommended (not to say insisted) me to choose something (obviously they meant programming), because of possible worse results. So I wouldn't say that's easy in Russia.

In Russia, that can be ,because there are many contestants .

However in Japan, many gold medalists enter both IOI&IMO

So the intersection of schedule is very serious(this year, DEGwer would be most competent in IOI team, even though he can't spent much time practicing for IOI, if he would enter both)

Some years ago, a Finnish contestant attended IOI, IMO and IPhO (physics olympiad) in the same year.

Do you know somebody who has attended more than three science olympiads in the same year?

We often have people who go to more than 1 international olympiad.

        May be a bug.

EDIT: Click +1 then -1 very fast, you can vote twice.

EDIT: I have found more efficient trick: double click into +1, then double click into -1. I tried 3, succeed 3.

Lol, funny. I guess it's because you send 2 requests to the server and it doesn't have time to block the other one before processing it...

I have a touchpad, so it's impossible for me :D

It also reminds me of getting different times when div1 and div2 contests (which are supposed to start at the same time) would start. They often differ by 1 second (in either direction), also probably because these times arrive from the server at different times.

There's the question of what we consider an international olympiad and what range of topics it could cover, but if we made the range reasonably wide, I'm sure there'd be someone with more.

If so, then I have medals from 5 ISOs (one from IJSO, too).

One unclear area is regional olympiads — the level of problems is often on par or higher than on their base counterparts, the region can get large (Asia-Pacific) and any countries can participate as guests... and they're between nations, so international works :D

Hi eduardische, there's no proof, this one is kind of a unwritten rule here. When they select participants for IMO, they tell them beforehand that, if they are participating in other international olympiads, they are not going to be selected for IMO (even if they are the best choice for the IMO team).

I couldn't find anything like this in IMO Regulations, so I asked for proof. But judging from your response, he probably meant your national maths olympiad organizers in Bangladesh and not IMO committee.

Yeah, it's unfortunate then, but can also be understandable — if the training for the one olympiad is really time consuming, that they might want you to make a commitment — so you have to rigidly prepare for it to go. Sure you could just go to other olympiads as well without actually training for them, but then is it fair for those olympiads and isn't it better to let other students through who are willing to commit?

However, while I can understand the reasoning behind these types of rules, I disagree with strictly enforcing them — there are some people who can do really well in multiple olympiads, and some of the olympiads are connected in one way or another as well anyway, so with enough desire, even training can be combined in some ways — so that one subject can help another. So I think restrictions like this should be individual only and depend on the actual situation.

Yes, he was talking about rules here in Bangladesh (BdMO committee) . And it's true that participants can mess things up when attempting more than one olympiad a year. But as you said, there are some exceptions as well. Bangladesh has seen a little of both in the past. Hope they start making some exceptions for those special participants from the next year.

This logic is very strange — and very faulty. There's no way "you don't know" would imply "you'll never improve", since you don't improve by knowing that you will, and there's obviously an easy way to know if you've improved — by observing that your English is getting more similar to the one in what you watch.

You also learn a language by observing how other people use it. Such a method isn't uncommon, and actually works (there are people who learn a language by reading books in that language).

He just sent the names of the representatives of Brazil which was the goal of this topic. Yes, football is a stereotype of my country, and I am sure there are other stereotypes for other countries as well. It is not offensive, it is one of the few things we are good at. There is more money invested in football than education and other general needs, you can see that just by the fact of the next world cup being 'organized' here. Those guys getting to the IOI is a big deal, and every year there are efforts to improve our results, just like it is in ICPC. There were some great results last years, and the way I have interpreted your comments is that you are making fun of their work so far, as they can't achieve a great result just like other countries does. It is not personal, I don't care about what you think, just letting you know how your comments might be read by some people.

Previous participations aren't interesting. Previous results are. There's a difference between someone who got 2x no medal and 2x bronze, and someone who got one gold, but from this table, you'd expect the former to be an experienced veteran.

I think that it is sad that in some countries there is a restriction to choose between IMO and IOI.. I participated both in IMO and IOI 2012. Maybe that unexpected qualification to IOI was a compensation for not qualifying to IMO 2011 which I desired and haven't made it because of many unlucky circumstances :P. I got two silver medals on IMO and IOI and took 2nd places both on national MO and OI, so I received nickname from my friend "silver human" :P.

And I have to say that I'm kind of ashamed that out of 4 polish contestants only 1 has an account on Codeforces. I will try to change that! So bad that mnbvmar didn't make it to the team, he definitely deserved that, but I think he is getting stressed on every important competition.

That's why articles can be important. Since the plural of IOI would have the same abbreviation, it makes sense to write it IOI as much as IOIs/IOI-s. You can see the difference between "the last IOI" (one) and "last IOI" or "last IOI-s" (any).

I don't think so. You can learn algorithms and solve past problems (which is very important part of preparation) without going to IOIs. The only thing that is specific to IOI (and not to, say, national olympiad) is your level of excitement: the more you worry, the less concentration you have (usually).
