I think that for first gained popularity contests should be free. And if you have interesting problems it should be. After that you'll be able to do contest participating 2$.

You should not expect to become millionaire this way. However things could be bit more easy if you build mobile client for your site and make free and paid version of it.

There will be a group of student which used a common account, with only $2 for 20 people to earn $50 => no one else will participate, they think that they won't be able to get $50. It will be a non-fair contest.

I think people like the top rated users of codeforces won't do that because they can participate in the contest and solve the problems by themselves .......

If top rated users of codeforces participated the contest, everyone, who is not "top rated users" will not participate because they think that only top rated users could get $200 => a lot of users won't participate. You don't like this.

We will divide users to two groups ....... High rated and not high rated people like div1 and div2 in codeforces and there would be a rating for everyone and if he is great then he goes to div 1 .... As simple as it :)

For example, I am a I-Master, before each your contests, I will create a new account => I am Div.2 => higher chances to get $200 => non-fair contest. As far as you know, top-5 participants in CF Round Div.2 only almost contains black accounts.

I don't see how a contest which requires paying to enter can survive nowadays. We have so many free (and high-quality) contests, I can't recall a week in which there would be no contests at all :-)

So you need a really good story of what is there for a person to gain by participating in a paid contest. The chance of an $50 win? Can go to a casino as well, much faster and no the risk of Petr stopping by :-) The extra-high quality problems? You have to show them and make people feel that they are really better than ones offered by TopCoder and Codeforces for this to work.

Plus, if one does have really great problems, offering them to a well-known contest site would probably pay more and be more useful in general :D

Hi , nickolas ... 50$ was a sample ...if the prize is like 200$ then i think so many people participate in the contest ... And about CASINO i should say in such website even 13 or more years old people can participate and it's possible for everyone to win a prize ... And its not just a prize like other prizes everyone earn without anything to do .. In such a website like this you code, compite, and think and then earn the prize much you had tried and its not just a usual prize website and it makes people improve their skill to solve problems and code them and earn prizes as much they deserve .. And i have a question .... If i make a website like this then would you come and join us ? :)

Basically your idea is a form of online gambling similar to online poker tournaments. Online poker is illegal in many jurisdictions, may require licensing, etc.

And if you attract 13-years old kids to your gambling site there are high chances you will go to jail.

There's a clear line between what "is gambling" and what "is compared, in monetary gain and not the way it's conducted, to gambling". You apparently don't see that line.

If you want to make money, create a competitive programming site like this one, pay problem creators to write good problems, host them. Fill the website with ads, or promise some company that you will bring talented people to them. It all requires some initial capital. I guess 100,000$ are enough, pay about 1500-2000$ to problem creators (per contest), so that they don't publish the same problem on Topcoder/codeforces but come to you. But first you will have to create/get about 100 problems YOURSELF and host some contests to become a little popular. Money is everything in life. If you have lot of money, everything is possible. Now, to answer your question, Noone will PAY to participate in contest because there are already so many free contests going on.

Give me 10$ today and if you will have such a site and there will be at least some quorum there I will give you 100$ back. You give 10, I give you 100. Don't you think everyone would like to pay 10$ to get 100$? If you think so, let's make this deal happen.

If you are smart enough to create interesting contest which will attract many people (especially with $2 fee) — then I fear you will already have cool and well-paid job and you would not be that interesting in trying to make living of these fees.

You see, contest at Codeforces usually gets about 3000 competitors. I do not think it is sane to expect more than 1000 competitors for contest with fees and prizes. So you are going to collect about $2000 — of them you will pay $1000 as a prize and what you have then? Laughable $1000... Hm-m-m

You think so? 1000 participants, 1 winner and the winner will be a legendary grandmaster like Petr, tourist or Um_nik. I have a better idea. There can be many contests with only two participants. In each contest participants pay x dollars and get (2 * x - del) dollars, where del is your profit for that contest (it is likely for del to be 1%-2% of x). if someone wins many contests in a row, in the next contest he will compete with more powerful (I mean who wins a lot too) competitor. So there is a bigger chance to win and many people will be interested.

And what about people like me, who wish to learn but know that they can't win anytime soon and it is a long way ahead. $2 per participation, that makes is around $10 per month and $1200 per year. So, I will have to pay around $600-$2000 before I become awesome at div 2. But once I reach div1 again the same thing will happen but now it will cost $2000-$4000 as the gap from new to div1 to the winner at div1 is huge. Won't I prefer to lose the contest and get back to div2? I lose $2 but win $100 in next contest.

Well there can be room leaders winning money. And rooms can be with grouped with similar skill levels.

The issue is same again, won't I prefer the lose a few rounds to go to lower rooms and win over losing in top skills room. Try again and again till you become successful is only true when trying, again and again, doesn't make you bankrupt.

I have done that in keteki.biz, exactly the same concept. The thing is all those who lost 2$ by not winning, will not come to take part again.

The thing has to flip, the prize money should be huge, by large number of participation. So that prize money is more than the feeling got from losing the money.
