When did you start programming? When did you start competitive programming? (for me i started programming when i was 10 and i started competitive programming when i was 13 and now i'm 14! :D) thanks for reading. sorry for bad English! :(
UPD: please say your first programming language (mine QBasic) ;)
Don't you have any relation to Morteza Pashaei? :D
No! i think this blog isn't about my family!
I think so ;) It was just a question ;)
I started when I was 12 (16 now, soon to be 17). I didn't know anything about programming previously so I started right from competitive programming :)
do these kind of blogs make any sense?
do these kind of comments make any sense?
I started to learn programming after my 20th birthday (quite late I know, I am turning 22 this year). I discovered competitive programming before 1 year and my first code was for SPOJ problem Life, the Universe, and Everything .
I also started programming when I was 10 (back in 2004), started competitive programming when I was 11.
My parents have no IT backgrounds, so initially I learned a lot of programming skills all by myself.
My first language is the good old Visual Basic 6. I had a lot of fun with it and had much success during my second and third year in competitive programming (4th and 5th place nationally). I did poorly in high school however, because of my illy competitive mindset I gradually picked up.
For all the programming starters, make sure you don't put too much pressure on yourself. Cheers :)
1.5 Years ago, in a galaxy far away, called "Milk Way", I started programming with c++.
I discovered codeforces only 9 months ago. But I had been solving some olympiad problems for some period 5 years ago. I've become blue now, and I'm planning to become orange during the summer holidays.
I was 24, and started competitive programming after 29.
I started programming and competitive programming when I was 15, about 3 and a half years ago.
I started programming about two years ago, and competitive programming about a year and half ago.
I've started in age of 12 or 13. I just wanted to mod my favorite game :-)
I started learning algorithms and competitive programming about 2 years ago at 20 after I failed to code a simple program to find the Nth Fibbonachi number at a job interview and got really pissed off :D
3/4th year ago when I was 18 or so
I started programming 1.8 years ago now i am 15
Kochekov, na aldayan 2 yyl boldy damow?
Allamogom 2 yyla bolmady. 1 yyldan gecen bolup biler Yone iki yyl bolmady!!!!XD
I started ...
On January 7, 2013, after my university admission test, I submitted my first code in UVa. More than 2 years gone!
I had some knowledge on C++ before. But not that much. I even didn't know how to use arrays back then. :P
Old days were really better. Less pressure, more dreams. :(
I was introduced to C by a friend back in 2004, when I took part in the National Olympiad and the USACO for the first time. Back then, I only used native types and C functions, I didn't use vectors, maps or anything of the sort. I kept practicing and taking part in competition until late 2005, when I went to the IOI and finished high school. Then I quit programming for many years.
I started again in 2012, with no knowledge of C++11, STL or any of the new C++ features, and I've made quite an improvement in my opinion. I'm still very far away from my goal, but I'm happy with the results so far.
You went to IOI in 2005? How old were you?
I was 18. It was my last year in high school.
I started two years and a half ago, programming and competitive programming :D, in fact competitions is the reason why I loved programming.
I was with the second generation of competitive programmers in our university, and we still have a lot to learn and teach to the next generations :D
I started programming and competitive programming when I was 13, 9 years ago. Wow, time flies so fast. :D
I started when i was 13, 1 year ago.
Started programming in 2011 and Competitive Programming in October, 2012 by doing miserably in Codechef Long Challenge.
I started programming in the 1st year of my university in 2014. I was already 19 then. I started competitive programming one month later. Pretty late I would say. :/
Started programming with the cool graphical language, Logo when I was 10 years old, and started learning algorithms and solving algorithmic problems when I was 15. It's almost 2 year and half I guess.
I started learning competitive programming using C++ 10 months ago ^_^ and now I'm 15 Years old
last year in July when i was 16
I started this year and I'm 15 years old, and I feel that I started too late to become good.
It is never late,if you started too late try harder than the people that started earlier.
Somewhere between 1991-1992. My first IOI was at 1994. Wondering if there are more people from IOI'94 here on CF (I know there are some guys from 95/96 — bmerry, tomlau, but not from the so distant '94).
Very cool, also out of curiosity what led you to choose Scala as your language for competitive programming, and how do you like it compared to more standard C++ and Java?
This is purely subjective so it may not apply to other programmers: I prefer Scala since it is feels much less error-prone than C++ for me (index checks, better readability, encouraged use of immutables). Besides, it allows way shorter code than Java (a powerful collection library, type inference, etc):
This is much less typing and much less room for bugs than Java code doing the same thing (it could probably be better with Java 8, haven't looked into it seriously yet).
On the downside, it is easy to write code which runs a bit slower than Java. I have failed solving several problems just because the constant factors were too big.
Besides, being able to use the same language as in my work also helps:)
I have no idea how young I was when I started programming, it's all kind of fuzzy. Maybe at 12 or 13 I already wrote some code that ran and did something. I remember that when I was 14 I already knew some basics of Pascal such as arrays and loops, but I had no idea about algorithms.
I tried (and, for all practical purposes, failed) my first programming contest somewhere between my 15th and 16th birthday. I then read a lot of problems, solved a lot of problems, listened to some lectures by older friends, and the next competitions went better and better.
The first of my two IOI golds was in Setubal, Portugal (1998), a little bit after my 17th birthday.

When I was 2nd grade (about 8 years old), I've randomly heard of some computer programming courses at my school. I was trying different sort of things back then, to see what fits me best (like painting, different sports, chess etc.) so I gave it a try. Despite not being able to understand everything, I enjoyed it. Two years from then I participated in my first national OI, competing with kids one year older. Back then, I defeated two years in a row the Rares Buhai at our national olympiad. I've dropped it until 8th grade, I was getting decent results at our OIs without too much training. At 8th grade I've decided I want to participate at jboi, so I constantly invested 2-3 hours per day and achieved it :D By then, I became really addicted at competitive programming. I've mostly learned it all by myself and made a lot of mistakes on my way (I think I made every possible mistake one can think during my practice :D). Despite this, I still enjoy contests a lot and I think, after 5 years, I've finally found my style of practice :)
i started programming at 13,now i'm 14.
Yesterday.
Started programming at seven (September of 2002), started participating in algorithmic competitions at the age of 10 (September of 2005)
Started programming in 2010 and Competitive Programming in July, 2011
I started when I was 10 ... (Now I'm 12) At that time I wanted to make computer games myself, and my first language is FreeBASIC. Last year, I started to program a game called "NEWorld", it was a minecraft-like 3D game and I used OpenGL to produce the graphics. I learnt a lot from developing NEWorld, and it finally become a part of my life ~ Here are some pictures:
However, I didn't know much about competitive programming, and I stated competitive programming half a year ago...
Try unreal buddy :)
But I liked write everything myself :)
UPD: [Not "everything"...]
at 17 (3rd year of high school) in C++ language
teacher name was Mr Asghar Zadeh(Mr Protocol)
and first program was print the area of a circle with radius 'r'
I learned some basics of C++ in 2013 but started competitive programming only in August 2014. My first program "Hello World!". :)
I started programming when I was 16 ( with Sgu ) , then started competetive programming(in CF) 3 month ago . now I'm 18 :) I started with C++ and I can use python too( newbie in python:D )
I was intruduced to the programming world when I was 12 (5th elementary school)!! then started doing some stupid projects using vb and delphi (trust me, they are useless for everything!!). I say the projects were stupid because they were typical projects just for fun! then I found out that there are more powerful languages such as C family (C++, C#, ...), First I started learning C, then learnt C++ and pascal (pascal was our lessons, we should have learnt that :( ) then I find that I love competitive programming (when I was 13) therefore left my project (at the age of 14), and started solving algorithmic problems which are useful for this genre of programming till now! this was my story!
BTW, I'm 15 now! :D
when i was 12 i was finishing my guide school(*) ! we are in same country!
*now i'm 14 and i'm in second grade of high school!
yes of course :D
Started both programming and competitive programming in summer 2013 (age 16). That year I had participated in local olympiads in physics and chemistry and found out about the international ones. So during the summer I thought it would be interesting to set a goal like: "qualify to international olympiad in subject x next summer". Estonia is rather small so I was cocky enough to choose most interesting x regardless of prior knowledge. Chose IOI. Worked. (Started C++ as that was the obvious choice from the set{C++,C,Pascal}).
Started programming at the age of 12, it was a mk-61+ calculator and its assembly language (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elektronika_MK-61)
Cool!
I started at about 13 on a similar one: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elektronika_MK-52
It even had games!
Later came BK-10, ZX Spectrum, then IBM PS/2. Good times!
Sadly I have found online CP sites like this great one only at 35...
