kuviman's blog

Hello!

We have organized information about cities and countries. Before users could add this information themselves, which led to duplicates, incorrect names, grammatical mistakes, etc. I parsed geodata, taking cities with population of 500+ people. It turned out there are more than 120,000 such ones. In addition, searching for cities has been improved — supported search by historical, national and other names.

Thus, duplicates of cities were merged and random garbage was deleted.

If for some reason your city has been inappropriately removed from the profile, try to set it again. If you can not find your city in the list, let me know about this and it will be added.

Thanks.

I really don't like a constraint imposed by the update — that the city in your profile needs to be in the same country as the one you officially represent.

I'm a Polish student at the University of Cambridge. I think it's sensible (and that I won't be the only case) that I want to represent Poland and have the Polish flag, while having Cambridge as the place where I live in my profile.

This applies to anybody who lives abroad — there's surely many such people.

Could this constraint please be removed? It will make the city search a bit more demanding for the user but that's it. You can add country names in parenthesis after city name in the search panel for disambiguation if need be — for example when you search for Cambridge you'd get "Cambridge (USA)" and "Cambridge (UK)" or further level of detail, such as state, if needed.

Please take this into consideration. Cheers

    I second this.

Furthermore, my country is called "Czech Republic", not "Czechia".

Your government seems to think otherwise:

In 2013, Czech president Miloš Zeman recommended the wider official use of Czechia,[34] and on 14 April 2016, the country's political leadership agreed to make Czechia the official short name. The new name was approved by the Czech cabinet on 2 May 2016[35] and was published in the United Nations UNTERM and UNGEGN country name databases on 5 July 2016.[36] On 23 September 2016, the Permanent Committee on Geographical Names began advising Britons to use the name Czechia.[37] On 26 September 2016, the International Organization for Standardization included the short name Czechia in the official ISO 3166 country codes list.[38] [39] Google replaced the Czech Republic with Czechia on Google Maps on 18 January 2017.

If you take a look at the paragraph below your citation, you'd see that the matter is controversial at best:

Many groups within the country do not support the name "Czechia", perceiving the term to have been abruptly adopted by bodies like the United Nations[38] without consultation with the general population.[39][40]

This suggests that the name "Czechia" is far from being widely accepted, as can be also illustrated by the fact that the Wikipedia article is called "Czech Republic". On a lighter note, the discussion on the talk page could warrant few blocked accounts.

At the risk of being (rightly) accused of argument ad hominem, I don't value the words of our foul, drunkard, law and court decision disrespecting joke of a president. Note that he also said, on occasion where he acted in his office, among others:

        • "Death to all vegetarians and abstainers!"
        • "The democratic way of getting rid of our prime minister are elections, the non democratic way is Kalashnikov."
        • "There are far too many journalists. We shall annihilate them."

I cannot imagine myself trying to live up to these quotes.

Google is a private company and they can display a big glass of beer instead of Pilsen if they wish.

On the other hand I like the community on Codeforces and I'd like to think it as a part of my social bubble — the Czech subset of which prefers the term "Czech Republic".

I mean I do not really care either way, but new name seems to be official now and Codeforces, likely, just populated all this info from some database

Also it reminds me a bit of topcoder vs TopCoder, and while I am myself prefer the later, I would not use it in something official, like ICPC Live overlays

In the text you quote it is only stated that "Czechia" is the official short name. It seems to me from the Wikipedia article you quoted that "Czech Republic" is still the official full name. Although I may be wrong, because it's unclear to me what exactly "short name" means officially.

It looks like the name is some nasty political issue, so if the name "Czech Republic" is still official, I'd stay with it since it seems that the community prefers it.

I think the full name would be the official formal name, like "Republic/Kingdom of Something", instead of just "Something". But almost no country is listed like that on Codeforces.

Are you taking requests for correction of organization?

For instance, there're "The University of Tokyo" and "University of Tokyo" existing in organization tab, and about a half of the students register as the former one, the other register as the latter one ("The University of Tokyo" is correct).

Of course it's absolutely impossible to check every organization if it exists or it's duplicated, but it'd be better if you are open to correction requests.

P. S. Duplication of "U Tokyo" had been happening also in TopCoder. After merging two "U Tokyo"s, the rank soared to Top 5.

I saw comment for Kosovo above, so I have questions now.

Why did you add Kosovo as regular country when there is a political disagreements about it ? Also Russia didn't accept autonomy of Kosovo — you are working against your conutry ?

I won't go further in political events, this is not site for it and I am not interested in that question as other people in my conutry. But I didn't expect it from Russian brothers.

Why don't you also campaign against other countries on the list that Russia and/or other countries don't recognize?

I do not see reason why I would fight for other territories which do not have anything common with my country...

Certainly you don't know whole story about this area and current situation, same as I do not know for other regions...
