How do you know that? I assumed the same, but now when I looked a little more carefully I see there is no information regarding it. Or at least nothing official or easy to find.

I asked about it in last year's secret group for finalists. The question is "seen by 15" and some organizers are also in the "seen" list, but there's no answer. I guess it's either undecided or secret.

Update on Facebook Hacker Cup 2018

We want to give a quick update on what's going on with Hacker Cup this year. We're taking a short break to make some improvements to contest quality and logistics, and as such, we won't be holding Hacker Cup in the first half of this year. Depending on how quickly we're able to make these improvements, we hope to have a contest towards the end of this year. We want to thank you all for your patience, and we look forward to seeing your submissions when we're back. Please stay tuned for news later in 2018.

Happy Hacking, The Hacker Cup Team

this was post on facebook.

Does anyone know what are the logistics improvements they are talking about? I'm curious if they decided to do something similar to GCJ (submit solutions instead of output files)

Why is there a rule of being 18+?

It's the same with GCJ, TCO and almost any other event with onsite finals. Probably it's just legal stuff. I mean on most sites you're supposed to have the consent of an adult to use them if you're a minor. But you can compete in it and win a T-shirt, you're just ineligible for the finals. The rule is stupid, of course, but fortunately it only affected very few people who were able to make it to finals when they got older anyway. I'm sorry for those but usually if you're good enough to make it to finals of such an event when you're under 18, then probably it won't make a huge difference (as you'll achieve so much more)

No, its fine if this rule is only for the finals, but I think this rule applies to online rounds as well. Ofcourse we can register as someone else and take part but that would not be legal.

Wow that's quite strange. I mean I know a lot of people (including me) who competed when they were not 18 and even got some shirts. Even more, those had their birthday open to facebook, like the easiest check would've said nope you're not eligible and it still worked out well. Indeed looking in the terms and conditions it seems under 18 can't compete:)) But as I said probably they just don't care. Nobody's going to sue you for competing while being under 18

On a different blog post somebody from the Facebook team wrote, that it only applies for the final.

This is the age rule of Facebook Hacker Cup

"2. ELIGIBILITY. This Competition is open to individuals who are registered users of the Facebook Service, have agreed to these Terms, and are at least 18 years of age or older on the date of Registration for the Competition."

and the age rule from Google code jam is

"1. Age. You may participate in the Contest only if you are 13 years of age or older at the time of registration, but you must be 18 years of age or older at the time of registration to be eligible for the onsite final round; if not, you are only eligible to win a t-shirt."

If Facebook can modify its rule to something similar to GCJ, it will be great!
