Hi all,

I competed for the first time in a Codeforces competition 4 days back. Now, I am confused which DIV to register for, this time. DIV 1 or DIV 2. Here, http://www.codeforces.com/help, it is mentioned that rating >= 1700 ==> DIV 1 else DIV 2. Now, I see registrations open for both the DIVs for me. What should I do? Should I register for both, and CODEFORCES would take care of the choice for me or, should I just register for DIV 2.

You should just register for DIV 2, because your rating is << than 1700. You can change the rating, when participating at your own division.

Does that mean, If I participate in DIV 1, my rating won't be affected or that I just can't participate in DIV 1 or that the rating would be affected and chances are way high for the rating to go down !!

If I am not mistaken, for each division, another division is unrated, ie you can not change the rating in DIV 1.

As Mostafa.Gabriel said, you can only participate in div.2 right now. While you're not able to participate in the div.1 contest, you can later compete virtually (which won't change your rating, regardless of the results) in div.1 as well.

When you have rating 1700+, you can participate in div.1 contests, and they'll be rated for you; equivalently, and virtually in div.2. If there is not a div.1 for the given round, you can also participate in div.2, but that won't be rated anyway.
