Hi everyone! This post is a little off-topic but I think it may help others as well.

So, I will go to university next year (computer science) and I think it's time for me to get a new laptop. I don't exactly know if I need something really powerful but I want such one. My budget is ~1200 USD. Moreover, I like gaming and it would be nice if the laptop has a good GPU. So, these are my questions:

  1. Does the weight of the laptop really matter much? I reviewed the brand new Acer Predator Helios 300 which has great specs but the laptop itself is 2.3 kgs and it's probably >3 kgs with other stuff (adapter, mouse).

  2. Will I have some free time to play games during university time? I don't play much, but let's say I will play for 3 hours each week.

  3. Should I avoid playing games and do other stuff instead of it? Maybe sports.

  4. Do I still need a reasonable GPU if I don't play games?

  5. Do you suggest having a touchscreen laptop?

  6. Is spending $1000+ on a laptop worth it?

Feel free to add your suggestions, opinions and speak your mind out. I will appreciate all your comments. You can also link a laptop from amazon to suggest it.

Hello, nice topic

  1. If you will take it to everywhere, 3kg can be problem for you. But if you won't, Acer Predator Helios 300 is really good gaming laptop for its price.
  2. If you don't play games often, you don't need 144hz screen and a good GPU like GTX 1660Ti.
  3. Gaming isn't a good habit for a coder :)
  4. It isn't required but a mid-range GPU like GTX 1050 or GTX 1650 can be useful.
  5. I think touchscreen is most unnecessary stuff on laptops.
  6. If you take it everywhere and use it often, it's worth.

BTW I'm using MSI PS 63 Modern, I was bought it with discount and I'm very satisfied. You can take a look from here.
Other laptops I recommend: 1 - 2 - 3 - 4

I hope I could help, also take a look at this youtube channel to get idea.

    Thanks for your comment.

About touchscreen, I think it would be nice to use it when you do online lecturing. It is easier to write on the screen unless you have equipment for that.

Well, this thing really depends on the country from which you are buying the laptop. Since you mentioned the price in USD, Yes Predator 300 is a great laptop but the weight is too much. I would suggest you go for Dell G7 gaming laptops if you are an intermediate gamer like me. I recently bought Dell G7 in India ~ 1700 dollars. In the USA, you will find the same in ~ 1200 dollars. And here are some stats:

PUBG PC: 70~80 fps ULTRA,140~180 fps LOW GTA V: 80~90 fps ULTRA, 130~150 fps LOW CS GO: 170~200 fps ULTRA, WHY SHOULD WE for LOW

And the screen does matter. Go for 144Hz screen at least, if possible. Because spending a good amount on GPU and buying a laptop with a 60 Hz screen is of no use. which is the lesson I learnt recently. I had to purchase extra 144hz monitor after buying this laptop. The choice is yours.

I would say the Dell XPS is probably the best laptop at it's price range. My friends and I all have this laptop and we couldn't be more happy. This laptop gives you all the computing power you need at not too high of a price. It's only 1.8 Kg too, with a great battery life.

I personally don't like touchscreen and think it's not needed for a laptop. However, if you do like to write on laptops you should probably think about getting a 2 in 1 tablet, so you can write easily.
