Hello everyone, I have been told by my friend that many students from their institute are involved in cheating on many contests of Codeforces and CodeChef and many of them have been plagiarised on Codechef. So I check codes of top-ranking students from the last contest i.e. Codeforces Round #652 (Div 2) and found that 3 of them have same code with a different basic template and different variable names and in some cases, they had unnecessary loops in their codes (which are of no use), I think they had done so that they can't be caught. Please MikeMirzayanov takes some strict actions against them.

here's the link of first-person code — https://codeforces.com/contest/1369/submission/84770782 here's the link of second person code — https://codeforces.com/contest/1369/submission/84775423 here's the link of third-person code — https://codeforces.com/contest/1369/submission/84779461

This is not just the single case, you can found that these 3 persons have done cheating in different problems also even the code of problem C is also same, even 2 out of 3 have same comments too, they are too busy in cheating that they forget to delete the comment. here's the link to the code- https://codeforces.com/contest/1369/submission/84790316, https://codeforces.com/contest/1369/submission/84793909, https://codeforces.com/contest/1369/submission/84794125,

here's the link to their problem D code- https://codeforces.com/contest/1369/submission/84807657, https://codeforces.com/contest/1369/submission/84801337, https://codeforces.com/contest/1369/submission/84808172.

Sad part is people who have to cheat even in div2B are rated Expert. Activities like this take down the credibility of ratings.

Hey please don't take it as offence I was just curious so I am asking, why so many from India choose this path. Don't they think it is harming them only in longer run? Even I know few people who had chose this path.

        This path as in CP/cheating.

If you mean cheating, then it does offend me a little bit xD but I guess it's a claim which definitely is atleast partially true.

I don't have any answer to this, but maybe the answer is somewhat related to why people cheat in university exams.

They do it to get a nice gpa and a nice resume, somehow people feel having a nice rating(with/without actual skill) at a CP platform will add similar kind of weightage to their profiles.

People caught in cheating are Experts. So those people who think that Codeforces ratings are important and compare peoples only on the basis of their Codeforces ratings must consider this post.

why people cheat in university exams.

So that they cross the min. CGPA that various companies put for placements. I don't think anyone cheats in University exams to make their resume nice. It hardly adds a line.

IMO, cheating on CP sites is mainly because people who cheat obviously want to get their ratings high so that they can show off on Linkedin etc. thinking recruiters would contact them. It's a very stupid thing to do because even if they get placed somehow, I don't think it will benefit them in the long run.

I recently came across a very interesting argument related to this. I heard people cheat in contests to learn. They say we would have learnt the algorithm/DS after the contest with the help of editorials so cheating actually made them learn that algorithm/DS earlier and they also got their rating increased. I had not heard an argument as lame as this for a long time, but it shows what these people think.

I respect your opinion but I have seen people getting placed at highly reputed companies mostly due to their very high cgpa. Also many get admits in good universities and there is a good cgpa factor in that as well.

I don't think it will benefit them in the long run.

            Well, I hope so.

had not heard an argument as lame as this for a long time

My perspective is of a tier-3 college student and placements on CGPA are almost unheard of (although not many companies visit). Maybe it's different for your college since you are from a tier-1 university. I believe you though, anything is possible.

P.S. imagine a CF international master get rejected in a purely DSA based interview and later see an expert at CF crack the very same role for that very same company :P

Companies look for that but a rejection only because of variable naming is harsh.

The sample size is too large, so the probability is much higher. But that doesn't mean to put a country's name on this.

I think there should be a Form/mailbox or something by codeforces where people can report cases of definite cheating instead of having blogs everytime.

Correct me if something like this already exists.
The point is that this is a serious problem nowadays and it will be good if some action is taken to reduce the cheating going on(given that I feel it's impossible to eliminate cheating all together). The least we can do is try.

Recently, lots of cheating is happening in codeforces. In most of the contests solution of problems A, B, C and sometimes D (Div. 2) are being made available in ideone (even in yestersay's contest solutions of A, B , C and D were out while the contest was ongoing) , which is not only increasing fake ratings, many genuine ratings are also being affected because of increasing ranks. It's very disappointing and the ones who are suffering due to this are mainly noobs, after doing 3 problems many are getting huge rating drops. It is even leading to frustration and loss of confidence. There are even many existing telegram groups just for cheating in codeforces rounds.

Well, these cheaters are ruining the fun of such contests. Moreover, they are creating problems for many students who put their CP profiles in their CV as recruiters might underrate their ratings. These people have no moral values. Moreover, on being caught on plagiarism, Codeforces removes the 2nd cheater from the ranklist and just warns the 1st one. I think, besides removing them from the ranklist, their ratings must be reduced significantly in the first time only. No warnings. Then only they will be afraid and might not indulge in such actions. So many people have recently become expert by cheating. They will not do well in the long run but for the present situation, many honest coders are facing huge rating drops. This should stop immediately.

Man, there is some place were they talk about problems or something. These people just "steal" rating from others. One of two things: or they get banned, or they get punished by a rating decrease (something like -1000)

»

I think cheating can be significantly reduced if whenever someone clearly cheated, decrease their rating heavily, and put a hover-note on that rating drop in the rating graph that this person was found cheating. Just like Codechef used to do with their plagiarism hammer.

This way, cheaters who were at least caught can't boast off their ratings earned through cheating. And, the effort of people who are taking on the duties of MOSS would actually be visible.

I will simply say the following in relation to this thread: I've been at the University of Central Florida for 21 years and have worked with many students (over 200 students who have competed for our ICPC teams) who have all come and gone. As far as I am aware, none of our students have cheated on Codeforces rounds. If you take a careful look at how we do in official ICPC contests (South East USA Regional, ACM ICPC World Finals) where students can't cheat and our students' ratings in Codeforces, you'll find no inconsistency. If anything, you may find that our students do worse on Codeforces than their ICPC performances would predict.
