Banning Russian athletes is a horrible step that sends us back to the days of the Iron Curtain and reinforces the narrative that the West is trying to eradicate Russia as not only a political, but also a cultural entity.

Forcing Russian athletes to condemn the invasion is also silly; it exposes them to risk from their regime, and is also an infringement on their freedom of speech or lack thereof.

Note, I am personally fully against the invasion; I just think that this cultural war that is being waged is unnecessary and unproductive, rather, it is regressive.

Well done to the ICPC for refusing to weaponize their competition.

Also, thanks for standing up for the participants of the Arab Region, despite being a Ukrainian in this time of duress. It speaks volumes about your empathy.

If you support banning Russians from ICPC, why do you post all this stuff on a website run by Russians? Why don't you boycott it?

    1. I never said I support banning Russians from ICPC, so don't put words in my mouth. I am very conflicted about this topic. <opinion>Nonetheless, I strongly believe that people that actually and actively support this war should not be invited to any international events.</opinion>

    2. I am just sharing the news with the community and Codeforces is the best platform to do it.

you claim that you don't support banning Russians from ICPC, but look at this."you won't be invited to international competitions and conferences. You won't go on vacation in Europe. You won't get an internship or a job outside of Russia."

It's very funny that you don't see any contradiction in your comments.

Here in India we say "europeans think that their problems are the world's problems, but the world's problems aren't the europeans' problems". Do you know how many Palestinians were killed this year? Do you know how many Yemenis were killed because of Saudi's airstrike? Do you know how many Armenians were killed by the Azerbaijani dictator? There are so many armed conflicts in this world and every government has sins, why do you only care about Ukraine and do you think your country is very innocent?

ICPC has nothing to do with politics, and I believe the Russian programmers who are eligible to participate in this event won't support the destruction of lives to accomplish a political agenda.

Your comments and blogs bring nothing except more hate to this community.

In Europe we also say "when the US wet their bed, the world has to sleep in it". I appreciate your criticism and you are certainty right to say that many western countries are focused primarily on themselves, while lacking effort to solve problems that do not immediately affect them. We should do better, and when you draw attention to issues where people in western countries largely have a lack of knowledge, that's certainty helpful.

However, I do have significant knowledge about the war in Ukraine by now and I believe many here still don't understand the unfathomable magnitude and consequences of it. We are talking about a gruesome war of attrition, where both sides are sending soldiers basically to die until one side has incurred so many losses that there is nobody left to send as replacement. Hundreds of people are killed every day. None of the conflicts you mentioned are insignificant, these are all terrible, but the total number of victims in the Azerbaijani aggression is probably similar to the number of victims incurred in this war every 1-2 weeks. This is a catalogue of over 750 documented main battle tanks that have been lost by the Russian side alone, and the number of losses on the Ukrainian side is certainty also enormous. Over 15 million people have been displaced, over 7 million have fled to other countries. And a resulting worldwide hunger crisis might well cost the life of millions. Let alone the fact that the aggressor country wields the world's largest arsenal of nuclear weapons and the regime regularly threatens to use them.

So I really don't want to brush those other conflicts aside. But this war in Ukraine is where our attention primarily has to be right now. Already now, it will influence all of our lives for many decades in profound ways. Particularly in Ukraine, villages will be destroyed and areas will be mined and uninhabitable for many years to come. In both Ukraine and Russia, maimed veterans and those with psychological trauma will be a common sight for decades. So many families must grieve their loved ones. And things are still getting worse every minute.

Are Russian coders individually responsible for this barbaric slaughter? Certainly not. I'm also reading in Russian state news channels how Western governments are allegedly hostile towards Russian people in general. Let me assure you, that's not true. Russian people continue to be welcome, and both governments and people in the West must of course try to distinguish between the Russian leadership and the Russian people. But at the same time, a country is like an organization, and like in any organization, the decisions taken by the leaders will affect you no matter whether you agree with them. In this case, the leadership of Russia is trying to conquer territory in order to win what they pervertedly perceive as prestige. And they use ICPC competitions as a propaganda tool. This was very visible at the last ICPC world finals in Moscow, which were sponsored heavily by the Russian regime in an attempt to project Russian greatness. Unfortunately, ICPC officials allowed the competition to be used in this way. For the upcoming competitions, in my view, it would seem reasonable to e.g. let Russian participants compete only in country-neutral teams without links to their nationality/university in order to make clear that Russia is not winning any prestige this way.

I also believe that there will be only few international competitions that Russia will be part of in the coming months and likely years, and any successful participants will inevitably become a focus of Russian propaganda in their attempt to project how they are currently 'winning'. So quite frankly, I believe that it might also be in the best interest of participants to be disassociated form the Russian state as much as possible.

Sorry for this long post. But I hope it helps to explain how, when people advocate for sanctions against Russia, it is usually (of course, there are exceptions...) really not out of antipathy towards Russian people, but instead the motivation is mainly the protection of the people in Ukraine (which I am sure is also in the interest of many Russian coders here) while also having the Russian people in mind.

Yes you're right, this war is very bad and Putin must be condemned. But when you westerners created wars in Iraq, Syria, Afghanistan, Libya, Palestine, Yemen and nurture dictatorships in South America, it seems that it's okay for you. You claim that the Ukraine-Russia conflict is bloody and a lot of innocent civilians have died. A lot of people in third world countries died too! More people, by the way. Why an european who is not even able to locate Ukraine in the world map can lay on the sofa, drink Coca Cola and watch TV every single day while our people must work day and night? We are also a democracy, why we don't have such privilege? Do you know where your wealth come from? Remember it's you violated the rules first, why you can defy the International Law but Russians can't? You think you're special? Only you matter? Dividing states into "democracies" and "dictatorships" is more disgusting. The US president once claimed that the Saudi Prince won't be there for 2 weeks without them. Is Saudi Arabia a lovely democracy? Oh! Right now there is an embargo on Russian gas, so you turned to this democracy for help! In fact you only care about your interests, it's not different from Russia or other "dictatorships".

Just a few days ago, Israel airstriked the Damascus Airport in Syria. Turkey also launched a "special military operation" against Kurds (Turkey committed lots of crimes against humanity in recent years, but all of you ignored it since it is your strategic ally, how double-standard), just like what Putin did to Ukraine. You don't care because the Arabs are not civilized, right?

When the British colonizers were in India, they looted trillions of dollars and starved our people intentionally. In 1971 all of you backed Pakistani terrorists, only Russia gave us a helping hand. We still feel grateful now. You westerners always utilize terrorists. Bin Laden and the Taliban were all your assets. I still remember a distinguished scholar in the west said something like "India is a shit hole" in a TV show in March. I also remember the westerners try to blame the global warming on underdeveloping countries such as India and China, but in fact you're the major cause of it since your carbon emission per capita is much much greater than the rest of the countries in this world. Your people are still very arrogant, but your good days have gone, you have finally met your match. Stop lecturing us because nobody believes in you now. Your hypocrisy is clear to the world. The world cannot be that eurocentric as before, new players are coming, no matter if you like them or not.

You know what? You keep stressing that Russia is a dictatorship. But Russia once had a liberal democracy in the 90s. It turned out to be a disaster. The economy was a mess and there were terrorist attacks everywhere. This is the reason that Russians adopt a semi-authortarian political system later. Vladimir Putin was very cooperative with the west at first, he even allowed the US fighter jets to flyover Russia's territory. Well, what happened next? What have you done to Russia over the past twenty years couldn't be more excessive. The enlargement of NATO threatened Russia's national security (Not propaganda, look at this lecture, the professor is an outstanding political scientist, he is much more informed than 99% of the users here). You also tried to smear Russia in shows and movies. Rigged international organizations and banned Russian atheletes from the Olympics even before this war. In this sense, I can totally understand Russia's anger.

Culturally and historically, Ukraine is more close to Russia, but it is also true that Ukraine needs the EU assistance to become wealthier. The leaders of Ukraine should maintain a balance between these two great powers in effect. But what did they do? They overthrew the statues of Soviet and Russian figures and fabricated the history, just because they wanted to provoke anti-russian sentiment. Do you know even Nazis like Bandera is considered to be a hero in Ukraine? It's a great shame that a nation has no respect to its own history and culture. In my opinion, Ukraine is not 100% innocent.

As an individual, I am very sorry to see this conflict happening. I am sure anyone who has conscience could be empathetic with the Ukranians who are still suffering from the invasion. I've also donated money to Ukranian children. But I won't blame Russia, if you Europeans dislike Russians you can ban them from attending events in Europe, but you're not the world and you have no authority to ban Russia from great international competitions like ICPC!

I'm sorry if I sound very impulsive, but at least think of what I have said!

Apologies for the late reply. Please rest assured that I thought about what you wrote quite intensely. You went through a great number of different topics.

There are some aspects where I agree with you, so perhaps let's begin there.

            • The grave crime of colonialism is not yet addressed in an adequate way by what were historically colonial powers. I think there has been some improvement particularly in recent years when people in North America and EU have become more aware of the historical guilt of their nations. But obviously, much more has to be done (e.g. paying reparations).

            • Wealth inequality is a huge problem that must be addressed better by wealthy nations. It is also in their own interest.

            • If anybody states that "India is a shit hole", that's very ignorant and quite frankly disgusting. I doubt that such person could be considered a "distinguished scholar". Of course, there are some stupid and hateful people in EU and US. But I hope (and am confident) that an overwhelming majority of people would strongly disagree here.

            • Western nations also have a history of supporting dictatorships.

            • In some cases, this continues until today: Saudi Arabia is a brutal dictatorship.

            • The invasion of Iraq was neither intelligent nor legitimate. Human rights violations there are well documented. Responsible figures should face a war crimes tribunal.

            • We are currently stearing into climate catastrophe. This is perhaps the greatest problem of our time. We are onto a path to disaster that will cripple humanity. Historically, western nations are responsible for an overwhelming part of greenhouse emissions, and these countries bear a great responsibility.

            Some minor inaccuracies:

            • To stop climate change, we all have to work together, and we all have to do more. Already today (2020), the emissions of China per capita (7.41 t) are similar to those of e.g. Germany (7.69 t), and are projected to grow further (250% growth since 1990), while emissions in Germany are projected to continue sinking significantly (42% reduction since 1990) (See here). Sure, by adding together the historical data, German emissions have been significantly higher per capita. But if China insists on spending the same historically accumulated emission budget, then mathematically, our world is doomed, no matter what other countries do. And that's also not necessary to gain wealth, because by now, better technology is available. E.g. because Germany has been funding the development of such technology through significantly higher energy prices since 2000, leading to highly efficient solar panels. So I agree that western nations have to do more, but I think most other nations also have to do more.

            • NATO "created" the war in Afghanistan following the terrible 9/11 attacks.

            • Few people in "the west" would consider Turkey to be a democracy or part of "the west". "West" is a very loose term, but if it means democracy, then India is a much more western country than Turkey. And I think people are also largely aware of military actions by Turkey, which is why e.g. EU entry has been stopped and there are some sanctions.

            • Russia never had a liberal democracy. In the 90s, people were given some more personal freedoms and political influence, but they never were in control of the government. I think this becomes obvious by the fact that a secret service agent was installed as dictator for life within a decade. The system remained deeply intransparent and corrupt throughout that time. Moreover (and this is a big historical inaccuracy!) economic hardship and insecurity in the 90s did not come through such reforms, they were there beforehand. Why did you think the Soviet Union disbanded and such reforms were allowed in the first place? Exactly because of these severe issues, which became too overwhelming. You're only right insofar as limited and often superficial liberalizations did not immediately turn around the economic and societal situation.

            • Before this year, Russian athletes were banned from some sports events because of state-mandated doping. We have very trustworthy reporting on this aspect in Germany, so I can guarantee you confidently that there has been severe state-sponsored doping among Russian athletes.

            • Russia has the world's largest arsenal of nuclear weapons. The only way in which Russia has been threatened is insofar as Russian leadership perceives any democratic and free society as a threat to their rule.

            • It is also not true that Russian aggression started this February. Crimea has been invaded and annexed in 2014 and Russian military and proxy forces have been fighting in eastern Ukraine since then. Also in the vicinity, Georgia has been invaded in 2008 in a bloody war, and for similar reasons.

            Some points are simply ridiculous:

Bin Laden and the Taliban were all your assets

Come on, this does not even deserve a response.

In my opinion, Ukraine is not 100% innocent.

What the hell? Victim-shaming? Even if people in Ukraine solidly believed that they were direct descendents of Darth Vader, what does that even have to do with anything?

lay on the sofa, drink Coca Cola and watch TV every single day

This is a terrible stereotype. I think I know where it is coming from, but please let me assure you that people e.g. in the EU are actually not that ignorant or lazy. In Germany, we have 40-hour weeks for both men and women equally and a retirement age of 67. Also, I own neither a sofa, nor a TV, and have not touched Coca Cola or anything similar in years. I think working conditions in EU are pretty decent, many people actually like their work, and if, in contrast, people in India have to work day and night that's of course terrible. So you might be addressing the real issue of wealth inequality, but these stereotypes are really not helpful.

But now here comes the aspect where I really disagree with you:

You are suggesting that "westerners created" popular uprisings in Syria and Libya. And that the west is to blame for the Ukrainian resistance against Russia. That there apparently is some grand plot by western countries to conquer territory or stuff like that. And instead, your preferred solution is that Ukraine should just balance between EU and Russia. Because that's what the larger powers need to maintain their relations.

Doesn't that go against everything else that you said here? How can you say that the will of the Ukrainian people, expressed by their sovereign democracy, does not matter? How can you say that the people in Syria and Libya advocating for reforms are simply agents of the west? Do you honestly ask that Ukraine should become some kind of no man's land, some devolved territory with the only purpose to serve as a buffer zone between greater powers? Should we even draw some line-shaped borders through Ukraine to make that official? Don't you see the obvious parallels to the colonialism you rightly decried, where stronger nations decide on the fate of their subjugated territories?

Since you're so convinced of this grand western plot, let me put it like this: before this invasion, EU entry of Ukraine was nothing that was seriously considered. NATO entry in the coming years was basically ruled out e.g. by the German chancellor. And if you asked EU politicians, their clear preference would have been to focus on internal reforms before considering any new members. Because we are aware of some of the issues you've pointed out. We know that we are struggling to meet for example the challenges posed by the climate catastrophe. And there are some more issues that have to do with the structural foundations of EU. Democracy is a path where no system is ever perfect, and you have to improve it constantly. People and politicians in EU are keenly aware that major reforms are very much needed. So from EU perspective, there really is not a big interest to have any new members join the block, which would make reforms significantly more complicated.

However, the Ukrainian people have made it very clear that they would overwhelmingly like to join EU for many reasons such as to benefit from economic prosperity, protections of personal freedom or anticorruption laws. But one of the main motives for Ukraine here is the protection that EU membership can (hopefully) provide against Russia. From the perspective of Ukraine, this is (and has been for a long time) nothing less than the struggle for their full independence from an imperial power, the fight for their own country and freedom. EU now supports their struggle, but we are really not the driving force here. Given that you are from India, I'm really stunned how you are failing to see this. Consider those fighting for Indian independence from the British Empire in the first half of the past century. And now imagine somebody falsely labeling them as "agents of the Soviet Union" or something like that.

In the end, I'd like to finish this on a more conciliatory note.

You know this better than I do, but India will soon be the most populous nation on earth (if it isn't already). Few countries have ever seen such high and continuous economic growth like India, ranging from five to ten percent annually over many decades. And young people in India are certainly bright and well-educated. So there is no doubt that the actions of the Indian people will shape life on earth significantly, for all of us. It is for the Indian people to decide on their destiny. All I can ask for after you've rightly pointed out many of the mistakes of western countries: please don't repeat them. Please continue pointing out injustice when you see it and please be mindful of the information you consume. It is the consequence of our failures and mistakes in western countries that we deem democracy and respect for human life so incredibly precious and continue to strive to achieve them. This is also not an entirely western idea: for example Gandhi heroically fought for these achievements in India and placed the country on a good path for its future. You have the power to build a brighter future, where all people can lead a decent life irrespective of their ethnicity, religion or birthplace. I wish you good luck with all my heart.

How do you determine who does actually and actively support this war? Is it by nationality?

I know people from different countries that support the war. Should we ban those countries too because there exist people supporting the war?

Here is an example for you:

      Facts:
      1. All squares are bad and should be banned.
      2. Squares are quadrilaterals.
      3. Parallelograms are quadrilaterals.

      Conclusion:
Parallelograms are bad and should be banned.

Do you see that some logic is missing in that example? Or does it look fine for you?
