I'm in China.Because of the time difference, almost every contest starts at 22:35.My mother thought it was too late, and she disagreed. What should I do?

Bro, that's not a permanent solution.

That will make your generation gap larger, break your relationship in family, and it'll be even much harder to persuade her that time...

I have one way:In China, taking part in OI(CP's name in China) such as CSP and NOIP can make more opportunities to go to a good university(such as THU and PKU).You can show your mom some result when you search on the Internet.(Share her this page as well!)OIer who were in IOI National Training Team can straightly go to any university in China whichever they wanted. If you cannot, you can get about 10 to 80 extra points in Gaokao(out of 750).A famous saying:"You get one more point in Gaokao and you'll overtake a whole footbal playground of students."That is true, and the only dream of Chinese parents is just to want us to get good grades in Gaokao and go to good university, and will certainly get a good-salary job.And the same in Self-directed Admission of good universities.

If you are in strong provinces such as ZJ,schools also encourage student to take part in and your mother can ask teachers or other parents of students. If you are in a weak province such as YN,you can know on the Internet that those who made a great, unbelievable miracles also took part in one of the five subject competition. That'll make your mom support you.

All in all,as a student in China,I know that OI is a long and hard way,but finally it will be fruitful and meaningful.Come on,every OIer!Good luck!

you can get about 10 to 80 extra points in Gaokao (out of 750)

I have a question. I heard that the policy for Gaokao has changed. If you are not admitted to the national training team you just gain nothing, not a single extra point for Gaokao.

Is that true? Can students still get benefits (I mean benefits on Gaokao and universities) if they gain prizes in NOIP or NOI?

What is your goal when you participate in contests? Rating? Solving interesting problems? If it is the latter, you can always virtual participate or upsolve. So there only exists that you want to increase rating. Now, codeforces has contests in a comfortable time for you, so just participate in these contests instead! Yes, you will probably get more rating if you participate in more contests, but if your ability is increasing, the increase of rating will follow. When you complain about not enough contests to participate in, there are still users that can get to GM/IGM/LGM with very few contests.

People generally get better trying to solve problems without editorial, then learn from editorial. If you want to get better at contests and time management you cant try virtual participation. Then, as previously said, you can get great rating in a few contests that are actually in your timezone.

If you're still in middle school, you shouldn't stay up at night just for a CF contest. Really not worth it. But if you're older, explain to her why there won't be much problem if you stay up late, why you need to do the contest and, what you will get from doing it. You can try virtual participation if you can't stay up at night.

Usually i could only do 1-2 problems in Div.2, so i said to my mother that i will only participate for half an hour(I think it's enough for doing these problems).

If you're not competing for rating, you can choose 1-2 problems that you think the difficulty is fit 4 you.

If you want to solve 1-2 appropriately rated problems, just upsolve

In china, if i am not mistaken, competitive coding, ioi medals etc., help a lot in university entrances. Isn't that enough for her?

Well, thank you for this post.I am 14 and live in YN.I found that I am really lucky to have such kind and understanding mom. When I take part in a CF contest, although she always says that she will leave me to sleep, but each time she always she stays up with me till I finished. My mom is always there to listen to me and encourage me to do what I like.Even in the weakest province of OI and I do not have a C++ teacher,I still can get good grades in CSP.My mom plays an important part in my improvement.Perhaps this is common in your country, but my mom is one of those rare parents like this in China. Thanks, mom!
