I'm just wondering how long should I take before looking into the editorial especially if I'm not able to solve the problem after thinking a long time. Any suggestion?

In short, which ever level you are in, you must come up with a "naive" i.e Brute Force approach within 20-30 minutes & then try to optimize it further... Now this step can depend on the level of problem but generally after 1 Hour, you must try looking for some hints from the editorial.

But this has certain exceptions... Like when you have learnt a new concept/algorithm, and now you are looking to apply it in some problem... You can take a bit longer time ( 2-3 hours ) to understand & try to apply. It happens sometimes specially in DP,Graphs etc. [But this is for the learning phase only]

Hope this helps...Happy Coding !!!
