How can you be not smart when you're smart enough to know that you're not smart?
A weird paradox...

I'm not smart at all, but one thing I do find helpful is reading books. Can be anything, fiction, non-fiction, self — help books etc. Reading helps a lot.

That all depend depends on experience, if you want to be better in problem solving, you need to solve problems.

If you don't feel like an idiot at times, then you're either the smartest person in the world or an arrogant asshole. You'll always be able to find people better than you in one topic or another. That's just how things work. A person who's chosen to dedicate their life to something will probably be better at it that somebody who does it casually. That doesn't mean you shouldn't try to improve yourself, of course. But don't get discouraged if you feel stupid sometimes. That's normal for any humble and self-aware person.

As for your list of things:

  • IQ: I dunno, if you want to improve your iq then practice iq tests? I'm not really sure how IQ works, to be honest.
  • Problem solving: you've probably heard this a thousand times, but I'm not sure what else to say except solve more problems
  • Distractions: I could do with some advice on this front too.... From my experience, try to make observations about what's distracting you, and then make a conscious decision to eliminate those distractions. Try to get people you know and trust to help you enforce these decisions. I'm still working on this myself, but I suppose this whole comment is for me to post my thoughts so here they are.
  • Decision making: spend hours and hours obsessing over every small decision you make and then eventually confuse yourself into doing nothing
Make a list of your choices and what benefits and drawbacks each choice will have. But also remember that some things aren't super important. There is a point where you can spend so much time making a decision that you'd have been better off if you had just picked a random one and not spent your time on it. Those depend on the situation, of course. And try not to regret things too much. You can't know for sure what would have happened if you'd changed your mind on something, so don't beat yourself up about it.
  • Looking back on this list I think I'm starting to talk more to myself than anybody else, but I suppose it might be helpful for others too.

So you want to become smarter? If I help you become as smart as I am (assuming I am smart), its not hard to prove that you or I will be smarter in the long run. Will you help me if it's your turn? This is a border-line logical rhetoric. To balance the point, what if the smarter person determine who wins the war of your country vs mine or your company vs mine, OR gods(aliens) vs humans? Why should the strong help the weak? The weak can only (forcefully) take what is theirs. Only the stupid, will gladly release power. Isn't eVoluTion beAUtiFuL?

To be fair, I don't think people become smarter in anything, they just become more confident in executing such tasks after many reps (repetitions) of the task, 10000 is a good number. Skills acquired from one task can sometimes be hardly transferable (transfer learning) to another task, the only sure-fire way to get better at one thing is to do that activity. Also, its better to feel stupid at the beginning of the activity, that way progress can easily be measured, and, very boy, much confident-boost you will feel from this stupid activity than doing the ones you "enjoy".

3, there's a BIG diff between TRAINING and PRACTICE. Training is the phase where you feel like an idiot, you have to break a back, two legs and one neck for this phase, this is that phase where you do 18hours a day, 10000 reps, eat it, breathe it, you will NEVER BECOME if you don't train. On the other hand, practice is for pros, you practice to keep in shape BUT your best form will always be in the years or months when you were training, you will never be that good again. So, do your best work while training. If you ask me, pros decline because they only practice, they stopped training but they're still pros and have earned the rite of passage.

Finally, choose your battles wisely. OTHERWISE, you have lost your teeth, eyes, neck posture, liver health, spinal cord for nothing! These things you may NEVER have again. OP, I sincerely wish you choose something like politics or military. You don't need 10000 reps to beat the best in the former!

PS; kindly excuse my typos and color. No rights deserved :)

Try to think deeply on every single action you do and analyze it honestly and objectively which are the true reasons you do that thing. In this way, gradually, you reach a point where you know everything about you, including your weaknesses, your passions etc. Thus, you only need to find a way to organize your life based on your passions (thus, you do always what brings you pleasure and what develop yourself) and learn how to overcome your weaknesses and that's it (easier said then done though). What I wrote above helps you to chose the right path in your life... somehow. But in the case of being smart it's a lot more to discuss. There are about 10 types of intelligence and you should improve yourself in a standard level in all and I can't help here because this is relative. Though, if you refer at the mathematical intelligence, the only way to improve this is hard work and discipline. Firstly, choose your goals based on passions, then create a plan (overtime it could be modified slightly) and the respect that plan without any exceptions!!! Also, every day you must do something that is hard for you, that challenges you, because only in this way fast result will come. And the most important: NEVER EVER GIVE UP!!! Well, I hope this answer somehow your question:) Now, you only need to think how to apply this in your life and that's all. P.S. There are much more things to say here, but you can find them on internet and books, so I'll let you find them and apply in your life:)
