Vani's blog

Hello everyone,

I’m one of the contestants in World Final 2014 and won the third place (the champion of Asia) in the competition with my team Obsidian.

In the coming summer vacation, I want to find some partners who are somehow poor in algorithm competition and would like to train in this vacation. I can help you with some tough problems in online judge or other problems related to ACM/ICPC (such as the strategy during a contest). We can communicate via skype.

The motivation of the project is that I want to be more proficiency of English communication (I’m Chinese and somehow poor in English), and I’m aware of that I can help others with my advantages (algorithm competition) while practicing oral English.

If you are interested in this project, please contact with me via E-mail

I have received lots of mails and I'm so sorry that I have no plenty time for everyone who is interested in this project. So the person whose mother tongue is English or send mail earlier takes precedence. But you can also communicate with me via Codeforces talk or e-mail, and I will help you as possible as I can.

I'm sorry that I can not reply everyone who sent e-mail to me due to the gigantic number of mails I have received. I will notice you if I considered you as a participator.

How is it possible that purple guy took third place on the World Finals? Do you and your teammates have handles on Topcoder? I ask because they were not displayed in Ahmed Aly's table.

I think it matter this team if they participate nowadays at codeforces or topcoder there colors will be different
what you expect if you make a competition between red coders and gray one's ?

    Why you can't believe it?

I know about well participants of ICPC who didn't have a target, many people use to train in online judges solving as much problems as possible or simulating contests, is not necessary to be a participant of topcoder / codeforces contests.

You can't judge someone by its target.

No, I can and considering your color I want to say that you're not proficient enough to make such claims — to win gold medal one needs a lot of contest practice and online judges are not enough. So what I wanna say is that all that three guys are red on topcoder or high yellow and I ask them to reveal their handles.

Didn't the color of the guy who posted here teach you that you can't make any claims about who is proficient about anything? ;)

Also you can't say that they're of any color on topcoder, you can't even claim they have an account. It might just be that they prefer some random chinese online judge that has lots of tasks.

Formally, you're right but in fact it's not worth to spend time to talk to you because you're just random anonymous who loves to talk a lot and not to solve problems.

He is red on Topcoder and everybody is aware of his skills. And who knew that guys from the team who took 3rd place? Probably if you tell me their real handles I will say that I knew them

Don't bash people just because you don't know them, and really, handles aren't everything. I also found it a bit hard to believe, but okay, why not, it can happen.

This contest did go in a quite unexpected way, with K being well-known, I solvable using randomisation, not having to solve many problems etc. Besides, look at their results — 8 attempts at B, 7 at I and how close they solved it... it's fully possible that they had the necessary skill and what pushed them up was a lot of luck and many other teams failing (YuukaKazami's team, for example, who only solved 4 problems for some reason...

Now take a look at that site: http://finals.snarknews.info/index.cgi?data=2014/allteams&class=final2014&year=2014

As you can see, one guy is red on TopCoder, another one was red 1 round ago and another one (author of this topic) has rating 2070.

So information about grey handle in Ahmed's table is wrong and I was right saying that there's no way to win Gold medal without showing any good results in public competitions. For example, every team who got a medal has at least 1 red user on Topcoder in their squad and 7 out of 12 teams consist of all 3 red coders.

I have seen some coders(especially Chinese, check out the new coders who win Topcoder Division 2) who go immediately to stable red in topcoder/codeforces in a few contests. It seems they practiced and are practicing on some online judges in their own country in their own language and they improve just as much(or maybe even better) as they would if they practiced/competed on Codeforces/Topcoder. I think we can assume that there are very strong coders(not many, but at least some) who do not compete in popular online judges but are still excellent sport programmers.

Probably there exist such coders but the problem is they don't compete in ACM ICPC and we discuss here only ACM ICPC performance.

I will take my words back if you can show me at least one team among last 5 years gold medalists which doesn't compete on Codeforces or TopCoder.

I don't know about ACM ICPC teams but I am just saying that it is possible to prepare without competing at cf/tc. That is what I believe but I have no evidence(other than the current team we are talking about) to support the fact. I don't understand why you would think that is impossible.

TC and CF aren't the only online judges in the world.
in fact, to some participants (unlike me :D), they may not even be the most popular OJs in the world.
