Binary problems are conventional ACM ICPC style problems where the result is either Accepted or Not Accepted (can be WA, TLE, RTE etc). So you get either 1 or 0 as the score for these types of problems. In contrast the challenge problems are typically optimization problems, where one has to either maximize or minimize his score. The best entry gets 1 point while the rest get some fraction between 0 and 1 based on their score relative to the best score.
