They are friends, but it's also pretty official:)) Also half of Oxford's 2017 class is Romanian. But these 3 knew each other since 2-3 years ago from our Olympiads. As a matter of fact, I am going to be in a similar team (with 2 other Romanians whom I know from Olympiads and also got in to Oxford). There is no centralized team selection in most universities: people who know each other just build a team and give it a chance. And just as a fun fact: Cambridge team is also fully Serbian:))

I'm not a student there yet, so I can't tell. But I'm pretty sure they do, at least Cambridge. Oxford most likely too, but it is more of a special case because it has been participating only since 2 years ago so it's not really developed on this area. Just tag those from the team to ask:)

Speaking for Cambridge: we have been able to get travel and accommodation support from our Department (and often, Colleges).

However, it is evident that they're not really accustomed/involved with this stuff, i.e. there's not an 'established' way of funding, but a few responsible people have to sort funding out directly and separately for every year. Especially this year, when we had an unusual number of teams advancing to the regionals.

And just to add to the above conversation: all of our contending teams at NWERC this year have been (nearly-)homogeneous w.r.t. nationality. It makes sense — people who have had the chance to work together before coming to university will have already developed somewhat of a nice synergy in the problem-solving process.

In Chinese "Beijing Normal University" is "北京師範大學", which means Beijing college for teachers literally. I suppose "Normal" means that they expect their students to follow the norms and become the norms of the future generations?

I think it's translated from the French école normale (normal school). In English, normal means ordinary, but in French it also means "that which serves as a model or a standard". That means it's a model school, that is, a school that aims to create schools like itself.

It is possible that the ICPC Site isn't totally complete. At my regional competition, it's known that the top 3 teams advance to the finals, and the 3rd team was Carnegie Mellon, but I don't see Carnegie Mellon there either.

That said, it's also possible that they changed the rules about how many people from my region advance, but I don't think that's too likely.

EDIT: Talked to my coach, turns out they did change the rules about how many people from my region advance. So you're definitely right.

It depends on how many teams competed on that site. In my region (Asia EC) each regionals 1 in 100 team advances (eg: Xi'An regionals have ~300 teams, so 3 teams advance, and Hong Kong regionals have ~30 teams, so only 1 team advances). The priority of advance is also affected by the results of EC Finals and Medal awarding team from the last year.

I don't think that happened here as I am from Bangladesh so I know that Jagannath University wasn't even in top 10 in my region. The qualifying two teams are already mentioned. I thought maybe they went to some other country to participate but I couldn't find any proof of that either.

Kognition Carnegie Mellon team CMU1 was just added to the list.

That's good to hear. They had a pretty solid team, we got lucky beating them on penalty, since one of our guys is really good at implementation problems and our set this year had a lot of those. They definitely deserved a spot at WF.

Your region should definitely have more than one slot, UCF basically has a monopoly on that region, but Tech could definitely have a team stronger than many WF teams.

Haha, thanks for the support! Congratulations on making it to WF! We did ECNA 2017 in one of our practices and agree that it was an implementation + geo fest.

Actually, we solved 7/11 problems in our region which had a hard problemset this year. Our region shared about 4 to 5 problems with other regions (MAUSA, SoCal, PACNW) and comparing my team's performance to other regional winners on these common problems, it seems like we did well enough to qualify for WF. We came nowhere close to beating UCF though (they solved 10/11 and WAed the 11th) so it might be the reason we didn't get a wildcard!

It would be nice to know if the list is finalized or if they have more slots available since usually North America seems to get >= 25 slots. It's frustrating to visit the website daily to look for updates.

Is it possible to have two teams from one university?

One of those teams (named CrockPot) got permission to participate in ICPC 2017, but unfortunately the hosted country refused to give visa, and CrockPot couldn't take chance to participate in ICPC world finals. ACM ICPC decided to give them another chance in 2018! This is the whole story..
