otajonov_sherzod's blog

Hey nerds,

so i have been encountering quite a lot of comments(like memes or just regular comments) that are not in english/russian. This usually annoys me to be honest. I believe we should respect codeforces enough to use the recommended languages(russian or english). Some people even say "use some translation tool/extension" when you ask them not to use non-english/non-russian language. Well, to those who think that way, maybe problem setters should make contests in their native language and ask participants to "use some translation tool/extension" to understand the statement, Dont you think? and everyone should comment/write blogs in their own language right?

So what I wanted to say is that lets use English or Russian and not complain about getting downvotes for "just a meme"(which only certain people understand)

cheers.

What if it's not just about translation though? Most memes have references which only certain people can understand. I'm not supporting either side, just painting the true picture — translation would not resolve this problem, you also need the relevant background.

Even then, it may only be funny/make sense in the native language because certain phrases lose their touch when translated.

If you are at it. I see russian also as a native language. In that case, we should even not allow russian because only a handful people here know that.

I didn't see any useful Russian comments for the last 5 years. It is de facto English-only site with some people shit in the comments with their native languages.

And even if someone writes in Russian, it is hidden in English interface and doesn't disturb anyone.

I mean I dont really have problem with russian, and I agree about seeing russian comments very rare. The point is people that who shit in native languages are gonna just do it anyways, there is no point in this blog

I dont really care about russian language, because i dont really know any russian. i said it because codeforces has separate section or something(that russian flag) and any russian comments/blogs are visible in English part. So i dont care if it stays or not.

Why do you care so much about reading some random comments? Mind your own business. If it was written in some other languages, it means that it was not meant for you to read. Also your logic is deeply flawed. You are comparing problem statements with random comments. Normally, a comment contains little to no important information. And even if it does, it is almost always written in English. Because, if your intention is to help as many people as possible, you will want to write it in a way that is meaningful to a wide range of audience. Similar logic holds for problem statements. Also I have no problem with people discussing things in their native language if they want to do so. If you are so outraged go fap instead of writing these blogs.

As someone who can understand Russian, I can tell you that many comments written in Russian on this site are just insults directed at the other person. And even if some of them don't contain swear words, the message itself is often rude. My conclusion is that poor English skills seem to be very much correlated with low intelligence or bad personality. It's probably the same for the other non-English comments written in the other languages that I don't understand.

Sometimes cussing may help you to lose some stress. Now if I direct a rude comment towards you that you don't even understand the meaning of, you will rarely feel anything. It is a victimless crime. If I say the same words to a native speaker, he/she may get emotionally affected in some ways.

Your conclusion may be true for native English speakers. But for us, it is not mandatory to learn English. We can do almost everything in our daily lives without uttering a single English word. See China if you want to find highly intelligent guys with very poor English language skills. I personally hate this language. Because it is the language of the British colonizers! But I have no choice sadly.

Hmm, I didn't know that anti-British sentiment is still a thing even today, but maybe that explains some of the negativity in the comments.

Of course English is not mandatory, but if someone wants to become a software developer, then understanding English is a big advantage. Documentation for a lot of new things exists only in English. Talking to a lot of competent people all around the world is possible only if you understand English. In many fantasy settings there's a "common" language spoken by most sentient beings. In a way, English became a de-facto "common" language of Earth. There were some efforts to invent an artificial common language (such as Esperanto), but these efforts didn't succeed.

By the way, I actually happened to have studied German language in school. And only learned English myself using language courses and self-study. Comparing these two languages, I find English much easier to learn than German. So I think that it's not just the colonizer efforts or military force that made English so popular. English is actually a really easy language to learn. Maybe Esperanto failed to compete because it didn't offer any groundbreaking advantages?

Is English difficult to learn for the Chinese and the other Asians because it differs too much from their native language? Or do they dislike the ancient British colonizers too?

thats why he said ,there is no other option than to learn English , and why it happended cause rn the major IT companies are either in european nation or once colonised british nation , but if someday in future major company get settled in china nd then people have to learn mandarin. And three is still anti british feeling cause of the fact that " your conclusion , that poor English skills seem to be very much correlated with low intelligence or bad personality."

Ancient people used to be very violent and eager to start killing each other at a drop of the hat. There were many bloody wars in Europe between Britain, France, Germany and the other countries. Russia controls the largest territory nowadays also as a result of bloody wars from the ancient past. It isn't like British were the only bad guys. But all these bad and violent people are even not alive anymore and their modern grandchildren can't be blamed for what happened in the past.

As for English vs. Mandarin, I would rather keep things the way they are (but of course I'm biased because I can already speak English):

should i take the fact that this blog got 15 downvotes(as of writing this) as people are supportive of everyone using their own native language for commenting and writing blogs?

Totally agree. In codeforces we have only two languages for communication. So please use one of them. Imagine if contest announsements or editorials was written in foreign languages. People want to understand each other.

For example, I'm from Belarus. But it doesn't give me right to write here in Belarusian.

Я спадзяюся, што вы зразумелi мяне.
