Hello,

I am 20 years old and I have myopia (nearsighted, cant see far away things clearly) of -2D in both eyes. I was wondering whether myopia is really related to doing so much closeup work or just because of genetic reasons. My brother and I used to play a lot of computer games till late night when we were in our teens yet he can see everything clear without glasses and I developed myopia in my late teens which is still increasing ( +0.25 every 7-8 months). Nobody else in our family has myopia except my cousin sister who is 23 years old and has -6D in both eyes. I am posting this here because obviously competitive programmers spend a lot of time in front of a screen or reading books. So share your myopia story and what do you think causes the axial elongation of eyeballs? too much closeup work or genetics?

Not a myopia story but, one fine day while I was coding, I realized the screen was a bit blurry at the edges of each pixel. I went out to search for how to fix subpixel anti-aliasing and all, and after spending an hour or so I realized I forgot to wear my specs. That's the height of insanity I can achieve sometimes.

Found difficult to read the blackboard at the age of 7. Was examined to have myopia of -1.5D in both eyes. As of today, I have myopia of -9.75D in my left eye and -9.5D in my right. Didn't actually play a lot of games except Project IGI and GTA SA. However, my parents both have myopia, so I guess genes worked for me( or rather against me :p).

First some context — I didn't have a laptop until I joined uni, and I got my glasses in 5th grade. During 5th grade my power in both eyes was (-6D, -6D) Seriously, that was the initial power of my glasses, I'm not kidding. I'm not 100% sure why I had such bad eyesight, although I remember watching a lot of TV and reading books and not being able to see the board in classes. My parents didn't take it seriously and they thought I was joking or something lol.

Currently its (-7.5D, -7.5D) in both eyes, it hasn't increased at all since the time I got my laptop. Heck, it got decreased from -8 to -7.5. I still don't know how because my screen time has increased tremendously in the past 3/4 years. And none of my family members wear glasses, so I don't think it's genetic in my case.
