Macesuted-Moe's blog

By Macesuted-Moe, 3 years ago, In English

Hello. I am a developer from the HydroOnlineJudge team, and I want to collect opinions in regard of translation of problems.

HydroOnlineJudge is a Chinese online judge system, which contains over ten thousand problems written in Chinese (some were collected from other sites).

These problems have not received any submissions from other countries. We are planning to provide English translations to these problems for the convenience of foreign users.

I wonder whether this is a meaningful project (Will it be helpful to you?), since the number of problems to be translated is huge and we currently do not have enough translators. If you are interested in helping us or have any suggestions, please join our discord server(https://discord.gg/NBMcXNaU).

I find that some foreign users are interested in coming CSP-J/S2021 which is one of the most famous algorithm competitions in China. Trying to translate it may be a good start. Wish you success!

fyi u probably need an English Judge System like Codeforces first as it'd be obviously pretty difficult for foreign users to use a Chinese judge

yep, just upload them to gym will be a good solution.

The topic of this post has become an ad thread, as people are discussing about the OJ. Since we are discussing the translation of the problems, why do we need a separate Online Judge? Is this post really not about promoting your online judge?

These Chinese problems are not only contain problems from contests like CSP/NOIP, so most of them can't put in gym.

HydroOnlineJudge is a non-profit website, we just want to share these problems to foreign users.

the system supports English already, what we need to do is just getting the problems translated.

Actually not only the problems, but also somewhere in system. Such as categories.

How come there are over ten thousand problems? I see '77 道题' in the '题库' section. I would be willing to use this website without any translation (I know no Chinese at all) if I could find there some of these notorious 'well-known problems in China.' I think I could understand most of the problems with google well enough. But I really need to navigate through the problems efficiently. For example, I with I could easily find NOI/CSP selection problems. Since I don't know how these contests are called in Chinese, how am I supposed to find them? I think it would be helpful if you included somewhere the description of the most popular/well-known contest names in China.

P.S. The English interface only appeared after I registered and specified the language in the preference section. I think the option should be somewhere on the navigation bar. If I were to open this OJ without any prior knowledge, I'd be scared away by the lack of the English interface while, in fact, it is present. I think that's the huge downside of your UI.

We categorized them into different problem sets.

    CSP&NOIP here: https://hydro.ac/d/ccf/p
and problems from original lydsy online judge: https://hydro.ac/d/bzoj/p etc.

That's actually nice. But how am I supposed to find these domains? Is there a list of all domains? What if I'm looking for something I'm not aware about? For example, I know there are something called 'multi-university trainings' from the HDU. What if I didn't know about these from the HDU? How would I go about finding them?

Actually we have many domains in hydro. Such as https://hydro.ac/d/bzoj/ https://hydro.ac/d/ccf/ ... Each of them contains some good problems. Problems of the same domain have something in common, for example, sources. So that you can find problems more easily. You can also create your own domain for a certain purpose.

Honestly, now Hydro hasn't prepared well for the users who are not in China, But I think Hydro Development Group will get ready in a few days.

Yeah. Apart from the language factor, I think Hydro is really a great onlinejudge. At least I think all the problems in this onlinejudge are really nice :D

Hydro is designed to make teaching & learning easier.
All users can create their own domain, upload their own problems, share them with each other.
They don't need to buy or rent a server and deploy one by themselves,
they can have a space and manage permissions easily, creating their homework, contests for everyone, or just for their students. So we created the concept domain.

To be honest translating 10000 problems to English sounds like quite a pain and I feel it is not needed for majority of the problems. Google translate is probably good enough to understand some statements because they're technical, and people can infer from the math and the sample testcases. I've used google translate for other languages before and usually could understand CP statements quite fast.

If anything, I think the main things that need to be translated are the problem tags/categories like 二分 (binary search) or 贪心 (greedy), as well as anything on the home page. I think translating the titles of the problems would be helpful as well.

Finally, I think that the domain system is quite confusing right now, because I cannot immediately find a page that show a list of domains, so it makes me assume there's only 77 problems on the judge. I think maybe adding a domain tab to show a list of publicly available domains would be helpful?

Have always wondered that with China doing so well at IOI why there aren't Chinese online Judges that cater to people who don't understand Chinese. Great initiative! Looking forward to seeing those problems!

Is there a way to look at other people's submissions?

You can see them in "Judging Queue" section. It will only show your submissions by default, and you can click "Reset" button in fliter to see other people's submissions in domain. Submissions in different domains are not interoperable.

I meant looking at other people's codes; just showing the test cases isn't very useful.
