Indian ICPC 2022 Regionals — Discussion

Creating this blog as I wasn't able to find any discussion related to the upcoming Indian ICPC prelims/regionals. As of now, the following regions have been announced:

1. Amritapuri:
  • Registration deadline: August 19, 2022
  • Date of Preliminary Practice Round: August 21, 2022 (online — 8:00 PM to 10:30 PM)
  • Date of Preliminary Round : August 23, 2022 (online — 8:00 PM to 10:30 PM)
  • Date of Regionals : September 17/18, 2022 (onsite)
  • Registration fees: INR 600 (prelims) + INR 2650 (regionals)
  • Total regional slots: 135 (75 in Amritapuri, 60 in Bengaluru)

2. Kanpur:
  • Registration deadline: August 20, 2022 (payment deadline — August 21, 2022)
  • Date of Preliminary Round : August 31, 2022 (online)
  • Date of Regionals : September 24/25, 2022 (onsite)
  • Registration fees: INR 1000 (prelims) + INR 4000 (regionals)

Similar to previous years, each team can participate in two regionals. I tried really hard, but was not able to find anything specific about the other regions (Gwalior-Pune/Kharagpur) apart from just their listing on the icpc website. Any news on the same?

Amritapuri is allowing us to register here. Not sure if this is intended but this seems to be for 2022-23 season.
Shouldn't we be registering for 2021-22?

    I don't want to set off any alarm bells, but my best guess is that it may be skipped :/ I did mail Amritapuri regarding the same but haven't gotten any response yet.

    There have been no updates on the ICPC site about regionals rules for 2022 (it says that it would be updated by September here). I sent ICPC Baylor an email a couple of days ago about eligibility of 2022 grads, and this is what I got:

    Around a week back, they sent emails with this poster. Also they've mentioned double site regionals, not sure if this would mean regionals in both Amritapuri and Bengaluru (or some other place).

Which year do we have to select 2021-22 or 2022-23, because last year Amritapuri contest was for 2020-21. So this year, the round is for 2021-22 or 2022-23?

Can anyone also tell, why Dhaka Regionals are happening in 2021-2022 Year while the Amritapuri and Kanpur in 2022-2023.

    I also saw this just now, it's really weird. Technically, Dhaka is doing the right thing. The 2021-22 page of Amritapuri and Kanpur is blank, does that imply that 2021-22 regionals have been skipped?

The registration for the Amritapuri Regionals site seems to have closed on the 2nd of August itself and is not allowing further registrations. Is anyone else also facing the same issue? (Since the official amritapuri website https://www.amrita.edu/events/icpc-2022/ says the registration closes on 19th August.)

    We faced a similar issue, but found a roundabout.
    You can register from here. Just click on "register" and you will be taken to the team creation page. We managed to do it that way.

Hi! During registration for ICPC Asia Amritapuri regional 2022 it is asking for a last name as mandatory field and only accepting alphabets, so what should I write in this field as I don't have any last name in official documents? Waiting for the reply! Thank you

After team creation, my team shows predicted ineligible; the log screenshot is attached here. All my team members have exact same university name in the profile and the team's university is also the same.

What can be the reason for this and how to resolve it?

    So basically in your registration last year you had a different university name and this year it's different. Ask your mentor who's registering to do it with same university name.

    It is more likely that someone else (from another university) has registered your email under their team. You need to see in your profile if there is any invites pending. Also see which university your coach is registered under.

    There have been instances when there were multiple entries for same university!

      There are no pending invites in my profile, also my coach is registered under the same university. So, I mailed the ICPC manager regarding this issue and she verified my team.

    I faced the same issue. To solve this, we used new email ids for registration, and it worked. We are predicted eligible as of now.

There was a mention of "No team member on the qualifying team may have competed as a contestant in two previous ICPC World Finals." in ICPC Regional Rules. But there are many examples of the same person qualifying for two consecutive WF. Can anyone please clarify this?

    No team member on the qualifying team may have competed as a contestant in two previous ICPC World Finals

    It means that your team should not have a member who already participated in two world finals before (Not necessarily consecutive).

    If you already been to two world finals You cannot participate in third one.

    For example tourist participated in world finals 2013 and 2015 so now he cannot participate in ICPC WF for third time

Okay so there are a lot of confusions at this point. Please clear any if you can:

  1. We should technically select 2021-22 as the year while registering for ICPC as that is the latest year, why is 2022-23 available as well?

  2. Why is the registration of ICPC Amritapuri site open under 2021-22 but ICPC Kanpur site open under 2022-23?

  3. Last year the count of teams who had registered for ICPC Amritapuri were clearly shown on the page. Moreover there was also a list of teams available. This year, the count was 1 when ICPC Amritapuri was under the year 2022-23, but now its 0 when its under 2021-22. Is the count not increasing or are the teams unable to register on the site?

  4. ICPC Amritapuri prelims was announced to be held on 21st August this year (We got a mail regarding the same). Since there are only 2 weeks left, is it possible that they might postpone the round since the registration is so unclear?

I am tagging Ashishgup here as he was looking for problemsetters for ICPC India. Can you please look into these questions and clarify it for us at the earliest if you know something?

    I can clarify for Amritapuri. Please register under year 2021-22. They updated it as other regionals were also under the same year. For more details, read here — https://www.amrita.edu/events/icpc-2021/

    For Kanpur, try mailing them for a clarification.

    IMO, teams count etc starts showing up once the team is accepted. There maybe many teams applied but they might not have started accepting yet.

    Amritapuri online round date is still same. No plan to postpone as of now!

        Hey! Be assured that everyone currently enrolled in a university is eligible. Additionally, those who recently graduated in 2022 are also eligible. For eligibility rules, refer: https://icpc.global/regionals/rules

    For the teams that already registered on 2022-23 amritapuri region in the beginning which has been changed to 2021 now, we were informed to wait for a week within which they would port those teams to 2021 season.

      You can register for 2 every season.

      If you are in college for 4 years, then you can apply to 8 throughout than span

We use to have fourth member as a reserve in ICPC why not this year ?

Team use to consist of four members three contestants and one reserve. This Trend is not consistent This year.

    Hey I don't think so! The regional happening right now is only for year 2021-22. As Kanpur also confirmed they will migrate teams later. You can't register for 3(Hope there are 3 regionals happening at least). For 2022-23 regionals, it would be happening after few months, you can register then! And that would be independent of this one!

Why has Amritapuri reduced so many onsite slots this year? Only 135 teams for the onsite contest, while also having the top team from each institute rule simply means 1 team per institute, which is absolutely unfair. (There surely are more than 135 institutes in the online round.). This rule can mean a top-10 team may not qualify for the regionals if they happen to have another strong team in their institute, which is ridiculous to say the least.

Vichitr any chance this can be revised? In my opinion, at least slots should be reserved for the top 100 or so teams before starting applying that rule. And seats should be increased. There used to be 250 or so seats in this regional afaik.

    Hey it is decided based on a lot of factors like accommodation availability, number of registrations etc. It seems there would be hardly 300-400 teams registered. Current count is something around 250. Hardly 100 unique colleges.

    IMO it doesn't make any sense to me to qualify almost half teams to Regional round!

    And the ICPC rules are made to increase the number of different colleges participation. Refer any other site! Amrita used to just consider top teams because there were more slots. But that wont work this time!

      From IIIT-H alone around 95 teams have registered. We surely can't be 1/4th the regional participants right? Are you sure the 300-400 number is accurate? (Payment completion should happen in the next couple of days.)

      This is such a careless and sad reply. Can you mention why you think only 400 teams would register? Around 90 teams at IITM itself have opted to register for Amritapuri and would be completing the payment in the next few days.

      If we would have known that only 1 team from a college would go to the regionals, we would just have waited for other regionals. The information regarding these so low seats was just updated on the website today which is too late.

      As _Enigma__ has suggested above, please at least have the number of teams in the regionals to be 50-70 more than the number of unique colleges so that atleast the top 100 get to attend the regionals. ICPC regionals is a very important event for us.

        Yes, this is very concerning. It is possible that even a top 10 team in the qualification round will not be able to qualify to the regionals.

        I sincerely hope that you can try your best to increase the number of seats for the regionals, or atleast have some rank better than which a team gets selected irrespective of the Institute Rank. Otherwise it would just result in poorer representation from the country overall.

        We also requested to increase the number of slots but no success!

        It is decided based on other factors as well. These are major reasons: Staggered semester, lack of accommodation, date constraints, all put together, it is really challenging for Regional sites!

          This is pretty sad to hear, I handle registrations for IIIT-H and out of those 95 teams many teams have asked me if it's possible to cancel their registration after hearing this news. It's clear that way more than 300-400 teams must have registered for Amrita.

          We hold team contests over the span of the year and teams have spent many hours training for ICPC and it's sad that they won't even get a chance to make it to a regional. Amrita as a site pulls in the most participation every year and this change affects us a lot. ICPC is a big event for us as well and this is very disheartening :(

          If increasing slots is not an option at least consider applying the top team per institute rule after a certain rank in the main ranklist as _Enigma__, Blitztage and others have suggested. Thank you :)

    I have mailed this issue to amritapuri regionals and they replied that they are facing some technical error so they will update ASAP because our team status is also showing pending even after we have paid it before 10-12 days.

Vichitr will the KGP regionals take place this year? If it's not gonna take place this year, will have to register for Kanpur (T_T), so any updates before the reg deadline is appreciated!
