Syrian IOI Camp — July 2023

Hello everyone!

I'm just back from Syria. I was holding a camp for the Syrian team going to IOI 2023 for a week there.

First, let me use the opportunity to thank the hospitable people who hosted this camp. The camp was hosted by the Distinction and Creativity Agency (DCA). They tried out of their capacity for hosting the event as best as possible. Although Syria is not a rich and developed country, they pay attention to the Olympiad and their talents. They welcomed me in the best way and planned for some excursions and more.

The members of the Syrian team are Wael_Zaiback, aminsh, BERNARD, NeroZein. Almost all of them were super intelligent but without much knowledge. This is normal for a country without an Olympiad system and structure.



Because of that, I tried to cover as many topics as possible in the camp. To name some, I can mention geometry, tree data structures, and sqrt decomposition.

I hope the best for the Syrian team in IOI and the rest of their lives!

why are they learning geometry for IOI?

    • As mentioned in the IOI syllabus, Geometric algorithms (AL10) are part of IOI.
    • Learning geometry helps you to improve your coding skills: implementation, functional (or structural) coding, clean code, and debugging.
    • Learning geometry helps you toward taking care of corner cases.
    • Learning geometry helps you to face your fears, as geometry is a common fear among IOI participants I have ever seen.

I think sqrt decomposition,mo'algorithm doesn't need for IOI.I didn't find on the syllabus.

    I still think they are really useful. Sometimes coming up with a mo/sqrt decomposition solution is much easier than segment treeing it or making some data structure

So thankful for everything! Great sessions , problems , life advices and so much fun and benefits. You changed our vision towards cp , technology and life. And of course , you're always welcomed in Syria and we really hope we will see you again .
