Try to make successful hacking attempt, instead of beging someone to give you code. Some users still don't understand that it's much more interesting.

There are lot of other contests — TC, CodeChef, Hackerrank... And you may also use virtual participation in previous contests while there are no real ones:) Moreover, you have huge number of contests available in gym.

Here in div1 we have to wait 3 weeks for rated contest; but you have to understand admins, they are probably busy with other stuff; right now it is NEERC time:)

Now think of those of us who are in div 1 and also can't do weekday contests. :(

You mean are too lazy to do weekday contests. If you can complain, you can go upsolve instead; for sure, it's a better alternative.

Also, has the thing with frequent "temporarily unavailable" error messages declined recently or are people just insanely positive thinkers?

are too lazy — don't forget that some guys have full-time work which does not allow them to compete in such rounds.

Hmm, is a programmer's job like an office job, where you have to sit at a desk and wait in allocated time each weekday, or one where what matters is how much work you get done, not when you get it done?

I had the impression (Quora answers and such) that it's mostly the latter, and also that managers have gotten smarter in that regard. I have no experience in that myself, though.

Also some competitors (me) have a different type of job, called school. :(

(and I never said I don't upsolve; but real-time contests are an entirely different experience)

Doesn't your school have plenty of computers? And don't you carry your laptop everywhere? You can still compete, I don't see how school is possibly be a issue, only the issue of rating, which you are probably afriad of dropping when competing at school.

Hello, but honestly you didn't have to try to take my downvotes on to you, as my contribution does not affect any ascpect of my life. I was just trying to ask ak some questions (I honestly should have asked him today at school, but forgot) about how he usually does solve problems at school (if you see the times at the submissions, but I know because I see him solve problems in our classes together)

Come on, it's just school. Skip a class or three if they're not important (I'm sure it's the case most of the time), it won't make anything worse.

I used to skip school a lot, then learn stuff from textbooks a day before a test when necessary. Some years, I had an "individual study plan" (think of it as going to university, except just secondary school level). I also did some contest/s at school (as good as anywhere else, except I don't need to go anywhere else).

Inb4 school's too tough: you're a purple coder, so I doubt that you don't have the memorizing ability required at secondary school. Even if it was true, you need to graduate and get to a university; once again, you're a purple coder. While not much by programming contest standards, it should be plenty to get to at least a good (read: doesn't refuse you purely because of bad marks in unrelated subjects) university.

That to priorities. If something (marks) has no value beyond a close point in life, don't focus on it too much. On the contrary, useful hobbies are useful.

              Note that learning  ≠  school.

Usually, when you're at secondary school, you don't get to dictate your priorities. Did your parents actually let you skip classes regularly? (This may be a cultural difference; I remember fhlasek telling me secondary school is a lot longer in Czech Republic than it is in Brazil and in the USA).

Now that I'm at university, the dreaded "regular time" at Codeforces is the time my school uses for tests. This essentially means I just can't take part in almost all of Codeforces rounds in weekdays, and it doesn't mean I'm lazy.

This coming from someone who has skipped classes at least 4 times in the past 6 months for topcoder SRMs.

If you only read Quora answers, you'll have a biased view. Unless you're in a good company, managers are unlikely to support you spending company time on other things.

Following is a conversation between my friend & his manager:

            • What are you doing?
            • Codeforces, it's an international programming competition.
            • Competition? Nice, did you get top place?
            • No, it's very hard..
            • Then what's the point of competing?

"Life is not about winning, you know?"

Alternatively: "So, you don't have hobbies?"

Apart from that, good to know (what view isn't biased, anyway). Still, fixed working hours are pretty bad in case the work can be done anywhere anytime.

Well, first, it's not hard to come up with "smart" comeback. But what happen after that? You can win the argument, but you can't "win" the person. It's very hard to convince someone with years of experience & strong opinion.

Our company is quite flexible (compared to other companies at this region): I usually arrive in office at 11am. Though there're lots of team discussion, talks to other teams, talks to customers, talks to managers about live issues.. (yeah, soft dev can be that boring), so you can't just work alone in your comfortable time.

It's normal for one argument to not matter, and it's sort of okay. Stick to your conviction — while not being too obstinate (I can be not obstinate depending on the situation :D), have people understand (if they actually care at all) what it is you're doing, why you're doing it and what can be / are the benefits of it. Just keep on trying till you run out of cake.

If nothing happens, you gotta deal with it, but at least you tried.

              Manager: What are you doing?

I: Codeforces, it's an international programming competition and I am trying to get the first division.

Manager: Competition? WTF! is that. You cannot expend your time in OTHERS things here ... Focus in your work!
